the PCV valve is located on one of the valve covers with a hose going into it

the PCV valve is is typically located in the valve cover near the brake booster-4.0L pushrod V6. On a 5.0L V8 engines, the PCV valve is located at the back of the intake manifold.

you pcv valve should be located on the top or around the intake on top of the engine. It is covered by a little pcv valve rubber hose...it is easy to identify because it is similar to a radiator hose but a lot smaller...no where near the size of a radiator hose...but when located, the pcv valve just pulls out and to check for it being bad, shake it and it should sound like something loose inside the pcv valve (thats a good pcv valve) but what they look like, they should be a silver looking color with a small little neck on it

What throws everybody is that the pcv valve does not insert into the valve cover as it does most cars. This one on the 1999 explorer is located directly behind or in back of the engine on the top of the manifold. You can spot this easier if you take off the covering(four screws) on manifold then you will see two hoses that connect to a plastic pcv valve (that's what threw me). this should help.

PCV . Positive Crankcase Ventalation Valves are always located in the valve cover pans with a hose attached usually leading to the air cleaner, or some other vacuum source..

Daeler Mechanic told me there is no PCV valve on my particular model.

Most Positive Crankcase Ventalation valves are located for the valve cover into the intake air somwhere closde to the intalke manifold. They pop out  on both the hoze end and on the valve cover end,with out need of tools. . If you shake a pcv valve and the ball inside you can hear move. It is OK and need not be replaced. I have 188k on mine. It has never been replaced.
