Mustang with no acceleration

Ok, i have a 1991 Mustang Fox body with a 2.3 liter 4 banger in it and i have a huge problem, IT HAS NO ACCELERATION!!! It takes me about a quarter mile to get up to the speed limit on a side street. When i start it up, it kind of idles high, but when i drop it into gear, the idle is low and the car shakes. Iv had the computer, fuel filter, muffler, cadillac converter, and the whole car looked at at the ford maintainence center in OKC and even they couldn't even figure it out. I got some friends that work on cars and they say that it is probably the mass air flow. Can anyone give me some help and possibly a solution?

How many miles on the vehicle? If the engine is in poor shape it may be hard to get it to run correctly?
My info for fuel pressure says 35--45 psi.
Any applicable trouble codes?
Some of the newer ford models, if you think something wrong with maf sensor, with everything off, unplug it, then start the vehicle, if it runs better, check out the maf sensor and wiring circuits.
My info on older vehicles isn't that great.

I'd start with the mass air flow sensor as your friends have pointed out. This is the first link in what could be the cause of lack of air flow, or a lean/rich fuel mix sensing issue. Your catalytic converter would be the next check I'd make. If your running rich, the converter will plug up or the O2 sensor may be affected and then the car will be shaking and loss of acceleration is often a result.

no problem. If you are getting that low of voltage on a load then you might want to test the alternator as well to make sure it is running at capacity.

SOURCE: 98 F150 idle drops, almost stalls

VERY COMMON ISSUE AT THE FORD DEALER I WORK AT, HERE IS WHAT i DO TO FIX IT. THIS WORKS 90% OF THE TIME, IT IS NOT A CURE ALL FOR STALL SLOW IDLE BUT A CLOSE SECOND.
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

It could be a lot of things, check the gas cap, vacuum leak, IAC, may need a tune-up ( check plugs, wires, air filter), seizing pulley, timing issue (check CKP sensor and CMP sensor), sticking valves, misfire, Fuel line pressure, or an issue with CAT or muffler.Good luck.

SOURCE: 1988 Ford Crown Vic Strange Idle

When you turn the key on does the check engine light come on? If not it may be burned out. It sounds like a MAP sensor or an O2 sensor is bad. I would suggest taking it to autozone as they do free diagnostic and seeing if a code comes up. If it is a sensor it should, if not it may be the idle sensor not reading right in the ECU. More than likely it is one of the sensors though.

Replacing serpentine belt on 1991 mustang 5.0 I changed the alternator but i can't get the belt back on.

Are you using the old belt or a new one? Just make sure the belt is the right one. There is only one right way to route the belt. There should be a diagram of the belt routing on the fan shroud or hood. If you can't find it, I've had some luck doing an internet search for the right routing diagram.
