Most likely you have a blown head gasket allowing oil to get in to the coolant.

Your engine cooler or your transmission cooler has failed and the fluids are mixing in your radiator. Note the coolant is corrosive to the internal bearings to your transmission and engine. Determine which oil is mixed in your radiator, pull the dip stick on your transmission and engine and look for any signs of coolant mixing. Try not to rung the engine and flush out the engine or transmission before the bearings or damaged and will cause you to replace the engine or transmission.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck

Chevy 2005 cavalier low coolant light keeps coming on and the coolant reservoit tank is empty after only 200 miles. what is causing this?

  1. Check the hoses and clamps going from the reservoir to the radiator and from the radiator to the engine. Make sure they are flexible and in good condition.
  2. Check the reservoir and radiator for leaks.
  3. Replace any parts they may be failing. If no leaks are found proceed to next step.
  4. Check engine oil. If oil has coolant in it you may have a blown head gasket or crack in the head or engine block. Another sign of a coolant leak into the cylinders is white smoke coming from the exhaust after the engine is warmed up.

I have a 96 astro van and I got oil and water mixing in the radatior.but no smoke.

If it has oil lines going to the radiatotor than chances are the radiator is bad. Also the coolant system will be needed to be flushed out if that is the case, Leave a comment.

1998 chevy venture low engine coolant light comes on but the coolant level is good. heater heat at max or is cold air. is this the thermastat?

you need to check the coolant in the radiator, not just in the overflow tank, you are describing a low coolant problem, the thermostat could be the resign you have no heat but it would not explain the low coolant light, remove the radiator cap ( only when the engine is cold ) and start the engine with the cap off and then fill up the radiator........HAVE FUN

Car overheating no heat coming from vents just cold air

NO heat because there is no coolant flowing throught the heaster core. Car is overheat since there is no coolant circulating in engine water jacket.
Check the coolant, if it is low, then check the oil level. If oil level is high then the head gasket is blown so coolant gets into the engine therefore there is not enough coolant to cool the engine.
If the oil level is OK and coolant level is OK then Need to check 3 following things:
-Bad thermostat is not open causing coolant stagnant then engine overhet.
-Bad water pump is not pumping coolant so there is no coolant circulating to disipate the heat.
-Bad radiator blocks the coolant flow from top to bottom radiator.
Good luck.
