    4. Engage the alternator electrical connections.
    5. If removed, install the splash shield.
    6. Install the drive belt and attach the negative battery cable.

Also, other details can find in your Grand Cherokee Repair Manual.

Good luck (and remember rated this).

SOURCE: Alternator and belt tension

I removed the alternator for my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I started by removing the belt, by placing a 1/2" ratchet in the groove on the belt tension pulley. Once the belt was removed I removed the two bolts holding the alternator in place and the wiring. The alternator bracket held the alternator tightly, it took a little persuasion with a heavy hammer and a piece of wood. The wood protected the alternator from damage. I also, had to remove the battery box and top radiator hose to get enough room to hammer the alternator out of the bracket. Putting the new one in also, took lite taps with a hammer to place it in the bracket.

SOURCE: 1997 Grand Cherokee. Tail gate wont open. Handle

These rear hatches have a cheesy rod and clip setup. You have to remove the panel from inside, you have to loosen the screws around the hatch and pull it away and reach in down toward the latch and open it that way so you can get the 2 screws out of the bottom easier. There is a peice of plastic in these that's a dust barrier, try not to tear it up too badly, and when you go to put it back, I use a spray adhesive to stick it back on while I put the panel back on. after you get it open you will see a rod with what looks like threads hanging there attached to nothing, and a little thing that has 2 notched areas and a clip to hold that rod into those 2 notches. bend the clip down to make it tighter and then force the rod back into place that should fix your problems. If that's all in place then it's the latch mechanism, usually they can't be fixed because parts aren't available, just have to buy a new one and put it in.

Testimonial: "Thanks very much, I'll give it a try. It's a bugger getting the inside panel off, I tried a few times unsucessfully."

If you need more details about youe Jeep ZJ Grand Cherokee, can check this documents about Repair Manual: Grand Cherokee 1993-1998 FSM

To get out, it's easy and doesn't require a prybar.
  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

Where on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo are the grounds on the engine block? ie:pcm, ignition coil etc.

The circuits you mention should be grounded to the battery through the main harness. The battery should be grounded to the engine at or close to the alternator, then the engine should be grounded to the frame then the body. Look for braided metal wiring.

How to replace timing cover gasket on a '97 jeep grand cherokee

Pull the alternator brackets and front engine brackets off until you get to the water pump. You will also need to remove the fan shroud and then the fan. Remove the water pump and then you will see an aluminum cover and that will be your timing cover. remove the cover and clean all the gasket off the engine and the cover. use a razor blade, and make sure there in no oil or grease on the parts where the gasket lies. Put your gasket on, bolt the cover back on with the new gasket and repeat the teardown process in reverse.

How to install a alternator on 1997 jeep grand cherokee v 8

It is fairly easy the alternator sits on top of the engine. Remove the serpentine belt their is a spring loaded belt tensoiner that rotates and belt will come right off. Remove the wires from the back of the alternator and remove the bolts holding it in place. The install is reverese of removal. IF you need more help go to you local auto parts store and pick up the Haynes manual it has a more in depth step by step guide.
