Hi, the light may have more to do with the fluid level in the brake reserviour, it may need topping up and if that does not also fix the loose handbrake then you will probably need to adjust it.

  • As long as there are no problems detected in the parking brake system, the parking brake light will stay on until the parking brake is completely released.

ABS light stays on if car is started with parking brake engaged.

The ABS light illuminates when there is an "out of specification" condition. From your description, it sounds like your parking brake cable may require tightening, or there may be an issue where the rear brakes are not properly releasing when the parking brake is released. With car that is nearly 20 years old, it is not inconceivable that the rear brakes and parking brake assembly may require regular service.

A good first step would be to have error codes read out by a local mechanic or auto parts store. This may give you a better indication of the specific problem. In any case, ANY brake warning should be taken VERY SERIOUSLY and corrected IMMEDIATELY, as you may have a potentially dangerous potential of catastrophic brake failure. PLEASE GET THE ISSUE FIXED RIGHT AWAY!

Abs light stays on and brake light on 98 durango

The regular brake warning light is for the parking brake being applied or the brake fluid is low. You would need to get the abs system scanned for trouble codes to proceed.

Park brake light stays on

Try setting the parking brake and place your car in drive and/or reverse. If you can move your car in either direction without any resistance, then you need to get the parking brake fixed. Your car should not be able to go in any direction with the parking brake set. Remember to take the parking brake off after you've checked it to continue driving.

Head lights burn some time only after you press and release the park brake repeatatly whats worng

Well the headlights do not come on if the parking brake is still on. So maybe in your described case you are having a problem with the switch at the park brake. The switch is probably sticking in the "park brake applied" position. If you look at the switches at the parking brake and can spray some penetrant on them this may free them up.

Parking brake light stays on.

Do you have a separate parking brake light and a "regular" brake light? Most vehicles only have one light, it illuminates when the parking brake is set, but it also illuminates when the system detects a failure anywhere in the brake system.

You could have a separate light for the anti-lock brake system (ABS ).

Your description of a light that is on till you apply the brakes is usually a sign of some sort of system brake failure. Start with brake fluid level, then inspect the brakes at each wheel, looking for a leak.

If nothing detected there, then you likely have something more serious. (Master brake cyclinder bad, possible something in the ABS brakes, etc.)

Others may disagree, but I would suggest not driving the vehicle (except to a mechanic) until this is corrected.
