First time attempt at front brake pad replacement 2003 rav4 want procedure to use and tools needed

assuming you have all the right tools you need to remove wheels first. you will see the brake rotors and calipers. the brake pads are contained within the caliper assembly. remove caliper and now you can replace the brake pads.

the front pads are pretty straight forward,just a c clamp is sufficient to press the calibers,make sure the brake fluid reservoir cap is off when you do them..just unbolt the calibers from the rotors and they work the same as standard brakes,but the rear calibers at time will need a caliber tool to turn and press the piston simultaneously

I would bleed the rears too especially if the brake fluid reservoir drained empty. Also you may need to drive the vehicle to seat the brake pads. Check and see how the pedal feels initially before you road test to make sure you don't need to pump the brakes in order to stop. if you do then re bleed all four wheels.If you don't have to pump the pedal and it just feels spongy then try going around the block a few times and see if the pedal stiffens up after the pads have seated.

Generally when you hear that noise it's time to replace the brake pads on the front. both sides tho you don't just replace one side.

To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front wheel
     
   • Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads
     and the 4 anti-squeal shims

To Install:

CAUTION
Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the
vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons
on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or
replacement of the brake caliper.

1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
   
2. Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
   
3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
   
4. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads
     NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced
     together with the pads.
     
     
   • 2 brake pads
     
   • Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
     
   • Clip
     
   • Front wheel
   
   
5. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
   
6. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Rear
To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Rear wheel
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
     
   • 2 cylinder slide pins from rear caliper assembly
     
   • Caliper assembly from rear caliper mounting
     
   • 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shims from rear caliper mounting
     
   • 2 anti-squeal shims from each disc brake pads
     
   • Pad wear indicator plate from the inner side disc brake pad
     
   • 4 pad support plates from the rear caliper mounting

To Install:

1. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • 4 pad support plates on the rear caliper mounting
     
   • Pad wear indicator plate on the inside brake pad
     Note: Install the pad wear indicator facing downward.
     
     
   • Anti-squeal shims on each brake pad
     
   • 2 disc brake pads with anti-squeal shims to the caliper assembly
   
   
2. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the sliding part of 2 caliper slide
   pins.
   
3. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Disc brake caliper assembly with 2 caliper slide pins
     
   • Torque to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm)
     
   • Rear wheel
   
   
4. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
   
5. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Front
To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
   this section.
   
2. Remove or disconnect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front wheel
     
   • Front brake caliper assembly
   
   
3. Make matchmarks on the disc and the axle hub.
   
4. Remove the front disc.

To Install:

1. Align matchmarks and disc onto axle hub.
   
2. Install or connect the following:
   
   
   
   • Front brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts
     
     
     
     1. Torque to 90 ft-lbs (123 Nm)
     
     
   • Front wheel

Have you checked to see if your caliper is seized? It should move in and out with no restriction.If it is ok have your wheel bearing checked.

you will need a 15mm wrench, a pad spreder, and high temp greese
1 remove the lower caliper bolt
2 lift the caliper uppward
3 remove the inner and outer pad
4 depress the caliper
5 lube upper and lower sides of the new pads and rear of pad (this will preent squeeks)
6 reverse procedure


remember pump brakes at least 10 times before test driving have fun and good luck

Remove two mounting bolts to the brake calipers to remove brake pads.

Replace left and right brake pads at the same time. Do not replace brake pads for one side of the vehicle only.

1. Raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Remove tire and wheel assemblies.
3. Remove pad pins and springs.
4. Remove brake pads, then shims.
5. Reverse procedure to install. When installing new brake pads, push caliper piston inward using piston compressor No. 490221600C or equivalent.

nothing Special that I see

check your brake rotor s and replace brake pads if need to but base on what you explain your brake are worn and touching metal each time you apply the brakes and thats not good for your vehicle
