What does "service" light mean?

I own a volvo s90 98 and recently the service light comes on whenever I start my engine and goes away after a while. What does it mean?

The service light comes on every 5000 miles to remind you to change the oil & check fluids. It is reset with a special tool that connects to the OBDII connector.

That's a "change the oil and service other stuff" reminder light. It comes on every 10000 miles (7500 supposedly, on "severe duty" cars, like cabs etc.)

You reset it by pulling the plug in the instrument cluster and using a pin/drill bit/pen to depress the button and turning on the ignition while holding the button.

It comes on at startup and stays on for two minutes.

What do the different flashing lights mean with picture? What do the pictures mean? I don't know what this particular icon picture means. It looks like a window with water coming out the top of it like a fountain

    You have to have that turned off by a Volvo dealership mechanic or go to a body shop. Had a minor rear bumper tap in a parking lot and mine went on too. Good Luck !

Is it coming from your exhaust. Does it smell like antifreeze? antifreeze has a sweet smell. That could mean a bad head gasket. Since it goes away after 15km, I'm assuming the heat expansion on the engine does away with the leak. It could also mean a lot of other things. Has your engine overheated recently?

there is a valve/switch on the ABS unit that gets dirty, this is probably the culprit. sorry no help other than that, but its a good starting point and it cured the problem on one that I had.

Service light comes on when I start the car and thengoes away after a while and then also a little lightbulb with an (!) in it...what does this mean? Its a 2000 Volvo V40 which I got yesterday to test...
Below I took some snapshots out of an owners manual for you vehicke explaining what the lights you are talking about mean. Also if you do want to reset the service light I believe and I know for a fact in the 1999 the procedure is to push and hold the odometer button. Then turn the key to the on position but do not start. Remain holding it until the service light starts to flash. At this point it should be reset but would suggest if it hasn't been done to get the maintainence such as an oil change done on it. If you want an owners manual for your vehicle, you can email me at [email protected] with your make, model and year and I will be happy to email you a copy. Don't worry there is no cost for it. I hope this helps and good luck with your new Volvo.

There is message showing service whenever i start my car- what should i do ?
Is there any problems with the car?
I'm assuming you mean the service engine soon light.
take it down to a local shop, and get them to put a scanner on it.
It'll show why the light is coming on, and from there you can decide what you need to do to fix the problem.

My ABS light stays on and my Trac is off - have no idea what this means. Has been like this for about a year. I have an 1996 volvo
The tracs off light comes on automatically whenever the ABS light goes off. Each of 4 wheels has an ABS sensor. The ABS light usually comes when any one of these sensors go bad. It could also be the ABS computer but the computers usually last the lifetime of the car on Volvos. Then, of course it could be some wire spliced somewhere in the ABS circuit and that would be something very difficult to find where the short is. But try the sensors, they are usually the culprit.

"Service" light just started coming on over the weekend. It comes on, stays on for about 5-10 minutes, then goes off. The other lights - check engine (I think), oil, etc. - come on when I turn on the car...
The light is set to light by milage and it is to let you know that the next service is due. This is reset by removing the rubber grommet that is to the left lower corner of the speedometer and depress the reset button.

Service light comes on whenever the computer senses some problem with the engine, it can be a small problem with one of the sensors but it might also mean serious trouble. get the car diagnosed.

Warning light
Hey Mary!
Does the symbol look like an upside down y? If so it is the lambda sign (the elleventh character of the greek alphabet), meaning that there is something fishy going on with the emissions part of the cars engine management.
Try to disconnect the battery over night and see if it goes away. If not you could bring the car by the local Volvo garage and have them read fault codes and reset them for you, usually without cost.
I'm thinking that it might somehow have been triggered by the towing, and that it will go away when reset. I would therefore advice you not to do any repairs before you've tried having the codes cleared and driving around for a while to see if the light reappears.
