Most common problem is the tension-er pulley is bad remove the belt and check to see if any pulleys have play in them see if they wiggle back and forth normally the idler pulley bearing wears out and causes the belt to ride at a slight angle marking it throw off the belt. hope this helps.

The serpentine drive belt on a Ford Escort ZX2 snakes its way from the crankshaft pulley out to the engine accessory pulleys and the serpentine belt tensioner. The serpentine belt system's design employs only one belt, held taught with the automatic belt tensioner, eliminating the need for the multiple belt system used on earlier model year Escorts. When the belt begins cracking, fraying or losing ribs, it's time to replace it. If you have entry-level auto-repair skill, you can change a belt on a Ford Zx2 in about 45 minutes. http://www.lightdeal.co.uk
There are 3 engines specified for your vehicle. Two of them (including the most common one) uses an 81 and 5/10 inch, 6 rib belt which retails for under $30. 815K6
If there is no diagram on the underside of your hood, or around the engine compartment, just wrap it around the crankshaft, and work your way around the pulleys, going flats to flats, ribs to ribs. There may be a couple of combinations, but you'll get it.
There is only one serpentine belt in your car. The belt's usually last much longer then 2 years, best thing to do is go to a parts store like Auto Zone or Parts Source and they can inspect the belt for you and show you how to inspect the belt. It's not the out side that you inspect, but the inside where the ribs are. Inspect the ribs for cracks or missing ribs, you can also maintain the belt by purchasing belt re-conditioner. The re-conditioner will keep the belt from getting to hard and cracking and give you longer life, Auto Zone can also give you the step by step instructions for you to replace your own belt if you need to. Good luck and hope this helps.
If there is no decal under the hood somewhere, start with the belt around the crankshaft, and then go flats to flats, ribs to ribs. You may have to try a couple of times, but you'll get it.
1) Start with the alternator.
2) Forward to the smooth idler
3) Forward to power steering
4) Down to A/C compressor
5) Back to crank pulley
6) Forward around tensioner
7) Back glancing off of water pump
8) Back glancing off of ribbed idler
9) Up around alternator (where you started)
Good luck!
Belt ribs under the Bottom pulleys, Ribs over the Top pulley and the Flat side inboard to the Tensioner Pulley. May sure everything is lined up on completion before starting the engine. Regards,DT
