Shifter linkage broke in upper part of 1993 Lincoln Towncar. Hard body in upper body broke, so you can't move or shift the car. It is not the cable, but in the upper linkage. Can I replace the upper piece in car?

If it won't shift sounds like you have a problem with the transfer case shift tube. You can pull up information about it on the internet. I'm replacing one right now. Go to Rock Auto .com
I ordered one for $23.00 with shipping you can fix it yourself. Pull up how to replace it. It's not easy but you can do it take your time & follow directions. No need to junk your car.

Try this first. There is a switch on the brake pedal that can be easily replaced by yourself and only cost about $5. I noticed my cruise control being difficult do disengage with the break pedal leading up to when i thought my shift linkage was broken. To temporarily fix the solution, turn the key on to the first click. Then shift the car into neutreal. then start the car and shift into drive or reverse. Once you shift into park you will have to turn off, shift into neutreal, and start over. It is a the electro lock or something like that on the trans and not the linkage most likely.

1991 Honda Civic DX Why am I able to push the car with automatic transmission while it's in park? The car won't start and run, either.

If the car rolls with the shifter in the park position and the starter will not engage the engine than the transmission is not in park. This could be caused by a bad shift cable. In order to confirm this you will need to find the area where the shift cable attaches to the transmission. While a helper runs the shifter through the gears check the linkage at the transmission to see if it is moving. If the linkage is not moving that there is a problem with the shift cable or the shifter. Some disassembly of the center council may be necessary to gain access to the area where the shift cable attaches to the shifter to see if it is still attached to the shifter. If it is and the shifter is moving the cable than the cable will need to be replaced. If the cable is moving the linkage at the trans than there is probably something wrong internally inside of the transmission. its the gear linkage falling apart, or just about to fall off, get under the car and have a look at the gear box linkage keep the brakes hard on and get some body to go through the gears for you, if its just hanging off find a way to put it back on again there normaly held on by a spring clips if its poped off thats the problem

Can't get 1993 Linclon Towncar out of park

SHIFTER LOCKED IN PLACE

  1. Remove the instrument panel cover below the steering column, then remove the steering column shrouds to gain access to the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid. The solenoid is part of the interlock cable assembly.
  2. Disconnect the wire connector from the rear of the BTSI solenoid.
  3. Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position.
  4. With the brakes applied, try moving the shifter out of the PARK position.
    • If the lever now moves freely in and out of PARK, perform the Circuit Test below.
    • If the shift lever still does not move from the PARK position, remove the BTSI solenoid from the shift lever assembly. If the shift lever now moves freely in and out of the park position, the BTSI solenoid is faulty and the interlock cable must be replaced. If the shift lever still does not move from the park position, the problem is in the shift lever assembly or the ignition interlock cassette

94 Camaro V6 transmission in reverse on all shifter settings

check to see if your shift cable is stretched or broken, also look on the transmission itself to make sure that the lever where the cable attaches to is not bent. also you can check under the shifter itself and make sure the linkage there is all ok. it sounds like your shifter cable is the cause for your problem.

if the cable is ok and you can see the shift lever move on the transmission than the next likely cause would be the valve body in the transmission.

1993 ford f-150 shifter busted

there are several possible ways this can happen, 1 on the transmission there is a cable that comes from the column, check to see that it is attached to the shift selector . This is located under your brake foot under the truck.
Another, on the column, towards the back of it under the dash, this same cable has a plastic cup that snaps on to a metal ball , it might have broke or just popped off.

Transmission

the body has probably sagged on your truck one side of the shifter linkage goes to the body of the truck the other to the frame.when the body sags a little the angle of the linkage changes and the shifting suffers..........on the fire wall on the steering column is where the linkage connects follow that down and at the bottom of that linkage there it an adjustment bolt.....with the shifter in park loosen the bolt, move the adjuster up on the shaft as far as you can without forcing it too much, tighten the bolt.......adjust as necessary to make it shift properly
hope this helps.......Good luck!
