About a month or so ago my engine light came on showing an egr code. I didnt worry too much about it and then one day last week it started idling rough and badly sputtering going down the road. I am wondering what the most common egr problem is in fords and if the egr is whats making for the rough idle?

The problem with all egr just not ford is the build up of carbon in the valve must times you can remove and clean unit and check valve action and seat when full stuck or breaks down you can get luck with the rough idle and loss of power but it also can get u stuck---stall and will not restart-remove and with a good carb cleaner u might get it clean and working but if it failed completely valve damage electronic connection burnt up-have to replace simple job for a diy

Yes.

The light would have been emitted when the valve was slightly sticking, I'd say the valve is now stuck open causing rough idle and lack of torque ( stuggles to get up a hill etc)
Sometimes you can clean EGR valves but normally you have to replace them.

The most common problem is a clogged EGR valve. In any case, you should take it to a mechanic who has the tools to diagnose it further, because 1/2 a dozen things can cause rough idle in a 10 year-old Windstar.

to cut the long story short
take it to an accredited service center and have the fault codes read
Indicates a problem EVAP system not venting properly and causing pump and fuel pressure problems
If you take it to a mechanic and he doesn't run the fault codes with a scanner first , take it some where else

More than likely an issue clogging the EGR if it shows dirty again. Take your car to autozone or your favorite parts house and have them pull the codes out for you, most will do it for free. Once you have the code, it will point you in the right direction. Do you have any issues with driveability?

White smoke and foam in the gas tank indicates antifreeze leaking into the engine somewhere. Do you smell antifreeze? You may have an engine seal leaking, most likely head gasket. It may be affecting the various engine sensors.

Idles really rough and today it died while I was stopped at a stop light . Had the codes checked about a week ago and was told my egr valve was bad and needed to be replaced .. I replaced it and it lasted...

There are several codes that can be set by the EGR system. EGR valve failures on Fords are very rare. There is usually something wrong with the EGR Control Solenoid, The EGR ports clogged up, The DPFE sensor (the sensor that monitors the EGR system) or the vacuum lines between the intake manifold and the control solenoid or between the solenoid and the valve.

Fault codes NEVER tell you what parts to replace. They only tell you which engine management system is failing to function properly. Anytime there is a fault code the system has to be diagnosed to find out what is causing it to not operate like it should. You can spend a lot of money on parts and not fix your EGR system if proper diagnosis is not performed.

If the gasket for the EGR valve is leaking it will cause your engine to idle very high and will cause the computer to set "lean O2 sensor" codes. If this is not occuring, it is safe to assume that the EGR gasket is not a problem.

There are many things that can cause your engine to die at a stop light. Everything from a loose battery terminal to a failed computer module to a bad ignition switch, to a malfunctioning Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or an intermittent problem with a Crankshaft Position Sensor. I would recommend having it checked out by a professional if it continues to be a problem.
