How to change check engine bulb - 1998 Ford Explorer

The bulb may be burned out or I have seen people put black tape over the area the bulb is in to block the light and then they can sell the car. You need an OBD scanner to see if any codes are present that would turn the light on. If there is a code and the light is not on, the bulb is not working. You can also watch the dash when you turn the ignition on to see all the bulbs and tell if that one is bad. Changing them is not easy, you have to remove the trim, take out the screws holding the instrument panel and then look for the bulb socket and change the bulb.

It' could be a burnt out bulb . Do a key on engine off check. Light check of the instrument cluster. If other lights are on then either take it upon your self to remove the cluster and change the bulb

I look forward to helping you with your issue but first, if the light is on all the time that means you have a fault code in the system that needs to be repaired. If the Check Engine Light does not come on when you turn the key on then this could be the bulb or the circuit board inside the cluster. If this is the case and it is a bad bulb you'll need to remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle and take it apart and change the bulb by turning it counter-clock-wise to remove it. u dont need to replace bulb-its workn--that emplyoyee needs a test---the lite is tellin u there are some codes--go git a scan done at a partplace etc--mite b an 02 sensor or other-----some peopl hav takn the bulb out to cheat-but car wont run------try disconnectn batt n see if the lite clears-cud b just a glitch

I believe this are the ones on the instrumental panel, you would have to take the instrumental panel out and identify which one is 'burnt' and replace with a new one. I changed mine, bought the bulbs from a honda dealer. Good Luck

The easiest is to get instructions for a gauge overlay and follow the instructions on removing the cluster to get to the bulbs.

The bulbs are 1/4 bulb holders from the back.
