I tried to put my Ford Escape 2001 in gear yesterday and the gear shift just slid up and down the shaft without catching on a gear.

Sounds like the link on the box has poped off have a look under the car at the selector arm if its not moving the shaft its the gear linkage in the car

Testimonial: "Thanks, MikeT! The cable had popped off at the transmission. My handy beau put it back on and secured it with a metal retaining cap from the h.store."

It sounds as if the end of the cable has either broke or the clip has popped off. With the engine turned off but the ign. turned on try shifting into drive then look under the truck at the transmission you should see on the drivers side an arm with a bracket that the cable mounts to. Locate the cable and arm. Are yhey connected ? If not the cable end should just push on with a clip to hold. If it is attatched note the position and go up top and move the shift lever again . Did the trans arm move? If not remove interior cover around shift lever and check connection there. If its attatched you probablu have a broken cable

Gear Shift not shifting properly

Depending on whether it is a column shift or floor, you have to get the linkage loose enough to get the car in neutral, move the selector back to the proper setting, and tighten everything up.

If the car is not setting on a hill or incline, you should be able to move the shift levers by hand when you've loosened the linkage and move it until it is in neutral. Put on jack stands and chock the wheels that are on the ground.
