Sounds like the brake light switch on the brake pedal is bad. Try turning the key just off the locked position, shift into neutral and start the engine. If you turn the key to the to far to the on position the shift interlock engages and will only release when the brake lamp switch activates.

Testimonial: "Very helpful for the shifting part of the problem, but the brake lights still don't work."

2005 Ford Escape, shifter won't release from park, brake lights won't work

Well the same brake light switch for the rear lights unlocks the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to shift out of park when the key is between lock and on. There are two fuses involved.

2006 ford sport trac will not shift out of park

Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and/or shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses and the bulbs. Is shifter fully in Park? Also try jiggling the turn signal lever.

Unable to take out of park position

Do the brake light work? No brake lights and it won't shift out of park. Check your fuses and check for loose wires. Check your brake light switch. If that has failed, you won't be able to get out of park. The other one if the shift lock solenoid which is in the shifter assembly. The brake shift interlock switch prevents the car being shifted from park unless the brake pedal is depressed. Try to apply power/ground to the proper wires & see if it will activate.. If it does, then the problem is between the brake light switch & that solenoid. Could be the wires or the switch.Make sure the shifter cable is still held down in place at the shifter assembly & under the hood. It is the interlock switch that you hear/feel clicking. It is for the prior generation but may still apply.

Good Luck and hopefully you soon will be on the road again...;-)

1995 ford windstar will not shift out of park

Check your brake lights to see if they work. The shift interlock works off of the brake light circuit. If the brake lights don't work it could be the brake light fuse, the brake pedal switch. Check fuses #21 and #27 in the fuse panel under the dash.

If the fuses are good and the brake lights work, then the shift interlock solenoid has a problem.
A work-around for this is to turn the key toward the "On" position just enough to unlock the steering wheel, but not far enough to light up the lights in the dash. Then shift the shifter into neutral to start. This will get you to a shop without towing.

My 1999 ford windstar has no brake lights and refuses to shift out of park. I checked the bulbs, they are good- I checked fuses 10,11,13 all good. Could it be the brake shift solenoid?

Check the brake switch on the lever above the brake pedal. It is really common for the wires to break at the connector. There should be power on one of the wires all the time and power on the other with the pedal pushed down.

1997 ford truck cannot get it out of park. Replaced brake light switch assembly.

The shift interlock system prevents the shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal (2455) is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator (3Z719) mounted at the base of the steering column tube (3514). If the ignition switch (11572) is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is continually on unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift lock actuator is the logical culprit. Check to see if it's getting voltage when the brake pedal is depressed. If yes: the unit is either faulty, weak or stuck. I can provide wire numbers and colors if necessary. I may need the engine size and Trans. code found on drivers door sticker. Good luck! Aoogha

Shift lever

There is a lock out solenoid that is turned on when you depress the brake pedal so you can get it out of park, it is a safety feature, if the brake light switch has a problem the issue of unable to get out of park will occur, check and make sure the brake lights work when this problem happens, if they don't then you either need a brake light switch or the wiring to the switch repaired.
