2004 Mazda tribute steering wheel squeaking

I have the same problem with my 04 Mazda Tribute which is basically the same as the Ford Escape. Don't think it is the power steering because it does the same thing when the car is off and you try to turn it. Anyone have a solution? If so what is the cost?

Sorry Doc, thought I was responding to another post! I'm getting a pretty loud squeaking noise when I turn the wheel. It started like it was coming from the steering column inside the cab, but has gotten louder and louder and now I can hear it when I roll the windows down or when standing outside the car when someone else turns the wheel.

Other sites have suggested a steering fluid flush. Would that work? What's the cost?

    Thanks!

Believed or not I was ready to change many parts from the steering system on my 2003 mazda tribute, but after two heures inspection we decided just flush the PE fluid (twice) and the squeaking noise gone away. It work for me.

Well a steering flush would not necessarily be related to squeaking.

So, you need to locate exactly where the sound is coming from...
It really sounds like steering wheel turning and resistance causes the noise, is this constant, or only while actually turning the wheel?

Likely it would be semi constant, so that would focus you on the assist portion... Be careful around all moving parts, but you need to locate the source.

Try taking a section of heater hose, and listen through one end and move carefully around with the other end and see what you find. Likely something under the hood, with your note about window open...

Now, if the squeaking stops when the steering wheel stops turning, now steering components are suspect.... So, again, louder with window down makes me think outside and in front...I would stand in front of the car, have your handy assistant actuate the steering wheel, and you decide which side, right or left.... Suspect items that squeak only during steering wheel input include, amongst other things, the entire strut, all ball joint, including joints in the steering linkage.... Be sure to keep clear of moving parts, your handy assistant would not know they they are crushing you, while truning the wheel......

Need to find a plastic Upper Intake Manifold for a 2001 Mazda Tribute 3.0L 6cy. Mine has a crack. A part number or a autoparts web site where I could order one from would be great. I've had no success...

The 3.0L Mazda should be the same as the Escape.
I found this website for Ford OEM parts (It's probably a Ford dealer);
https://www.silverstatefordparts.com/ford-escape-parts.html

Look under Intake Manifold:
Fuel system Cruise control Fuel induction Fuel injection Intake Intake manifold Manifold gasket

Intake manifold, escape, mariner, 3.0l, upper
01-04 ($214.98 List) $151.95
plus tax and shipping.
Don't forget the gaskets.

Heavy squeak when turning(like turning heavy rubber belt)Tribute

Your fan belt is slipping. As you turn the wheel you make a power demand on the power steering compressor. This compressor takes its power from the fan belt so as you steer the compressor shaft is harder to rotate and the belt slips as a result. The fan belt should be adjustable by loosening the alternator bolts and moving the alternator away form the engine and than re-tightening the bolts. Check that the fan belt is not worn, if there are obvious signs of wear or cracking then renewal would be the best step. Always make a sketch of the path of the belt around the respective engine pulleys before removing it.

REPAIR MANUAL NEEDED!!!!

The 2002, 2003 and 2004 Mazda MPV's all use the same Ford 6 cyl. 3.0 duratec engine. The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute of those years use the same engine. Therefore if you need an inexpensive engine repair manuel for your 2002 MPV, get the Haynes ($20.00) 2001-2007 Escape/Tribute manuel. Mazda sells the a MPV shop manuel for $180.00. I also own a 2002 Mazda MPV LX. 75k miles.
