I need to re solder the connections to my 93 olds Cutlass's digital instrument panel. Can I use standard rosin solder? Is this a good idea? I may need a new replacement, but I wanted to try this first.
Also, my driver side brake light does not work, but if used as a turn signal it does..I have checked all the fuses and they are ok. I even replaced the bulbs..
Yes you can use rosin solder. However there are type of rosin solder that should not be used with electronics. Check out Radio Shack for a good rosin core solder for electronic. Don't just use what you may have lying around. Also make sure you have a soldering iron that will do the job, not over do it. It's easy to apply to much heat to an electronics project only to ruin it.
Good Luck.
Yes, rosin core solder is okay for this.
Re the brake light, I would check the contacts in the bulb socket. There should be two of them. Sounds like one is not making good electrical contact. Clean it with emery board and spray with electrical contact cleaner.
Once cleaned, with a multimeter, check the voltage on both contacts -- put probe on contact and on side of socket -- depress brake pedal. If you don't get 12 volts there, it's most likely a loose/corroded connection in the wiring leading to the brake light.

It is not the computer.
If you take the dash apart and remove the digital insturment panel.., use a soldering iron and re-tin.., or heat the solder connections on the back of the circuit board.., just enough to briefly melt the solder.., to re-establish good electrical connections. You specifically want to pay attention to the IC Chip on the circuit board.., which is a 14 pin IC chip that is Black in color.., and measures about 5/16" x 3/4" usually labelled IC2 on the printed circuit board. You can start with this component and re-try connecting to the harness in the dash to see if it works.., if it works.., great.., if not.., just go ahead and re-tin all of the solder connections on the back of the circuit board. The 14-Pin IC Chip is usually the main source of the problems with this digital dash panel.
