Check Engine Light won't go off

My 2003 Dodge Caravan has the check engine light on all the time. I took it to a mechanic and he checked major stuff and suggested replacing the gas cap. The diagnostic codes showed "emission leak." I bought a new gas cap after he reset the light. It came back on the next time I turned the car on, despite the new supposedly tighter gas cap. Now I can't pass the emissions test because it says on the form to not even show up if your check engine light is on. HELP!

    There were 4 codes: P1684, P0442, P0455, P0456

Need to know what the code is. Emissions Leak is vague. But could be anything from exhaust leak to intake issues.

If you have an Advance Auto Parts store where ever you are, they will read the code and tell you exactly what to code is and what it means. Any mechanic who "guesses" isn't a mechanic at all - he's a thief. Emissions leak can be any number of things, but not the gas cap!

I'll admit to being wrong about the gas cap causing a P0455 code - seems as how it really can, since yours has been replaced, the other P04xx codes all deal with evaporative cannister system. Check for cracked, plugged, broken hoses arounf the cannister and and the evap control valve (usually in line). According to the codes you've got both a minor and a major leak in this system.

I also found this info on another forum.

A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
    A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
    A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
    Faulty vent o-ring seal
Possible SolutionsWith a P0442, the most common repair is to:

Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

1684 - means the battery was disconnected - possibly on its last legs. Low voltage during cranking can trigger this code.

Go to Autozone (free engine code check) and check your engine codes again. It might be a different code and a different problem now.

I have Grand Caravan 2004 with code P0440 Evap error. What I was able to fix it was to close the gas cap with 8 to 10 additional "clicks" (when close the gas cap clockwise, keep going/rotating until you hear 8 to 10 clicks). I drove the car for couple days and the Engine Error light disappeared!
Hope this helps.

2006 dodge stratus won't crank and cruise control won't light

Must not have been much of a mechanic. If the engine runs and sounds fine sometimes and other times it doesn't then it does not sound like a mechanical problem with the engine. Sounds more like a issue with either the ignition system or fuel system.

2003 dodge caravan 3.3 flex fuel hestitates while driving, and has little power. New plugs, and fuel filter. Put on machine and shows no errors, but the engine light stays on.

if the check engine light is on then there is a code and you may have to have one of the other computers checked for a code as another one could set the light on for example the tcm(transmission computer module).sometimes a fault won`t show but a problem is there in which case you will have to check it initially the old fashioned way, then proceed from there.

2000 caravan odometer and speedometer stopped working and transmission started slipping and check engine light came on. All this happen after hitting a pot hole.

You need to have it checked by a mechanic soon! Sounds like you lost communication with the Vehicle Speed Sensor. The engine computer relies on it for shifting the trans and working the speedo, wait too long and you could cause major damage.

1999 dodge caravan the check engine light is on but no codes in pcm

This has happened to me also and after having my mechanic check it out several times it was discovered a sensor had gone out. It was going to cost close to $140 to replace. I ask what would happen if I didn't replace it and he said "nothing, your check engine light will just stay on" So, we've driven it for the past two years with the check engine light on with no problems.

What does an orange engine outline light on the

It can mean many things. Problem is, its always stupid stuff like exhaust leak, fuel cap, o2 sensor etc. As a 26 yr Dodge mechanic, its a way for people to keep bring in thier car to keep dealershiips in business for service calls. As long as the car runs fine, dont waste your money on getting codes read or someone ripping you off on replacing parts. Another light will come on if something major is wrong. Such as check engine, oil, airbag, ABS brake lights. If ya just want to be sure (and waste money) goto a small garage and have the code read for $40 and post your codes and ask someone what it really means, thats if ya dont trust your mechanic. A dealer charges $75 and up. As a final note: talk to your friends, family, and neighbors for a trustworth non-dealer mechanic. It will save ya tons of cash in the long run.

Here is a link to the possible things that cause a check engine light.
These are GM but 95% are generic to all cars and light trucks no matter who makes them.
