Normally, remove tire, then just remove drum. Sometimes, for manufaturing purposes, they have some small copper colored clips on the studs that are used to keep the drum in place during shipping, before tires are mounted. You can remove these and discard.

Emergency brakes must not be set to remove drum, and sometimes you must work the drum back and forth to get it off. Also, can make it easier to remove if you adjust the brakes backwards, so they are not so tight.

Hit it with a big hammer hit on stud side and it will looses up and dont pull that nut

  • Anonymous Sep 06, 2011

actually there is a way to release the tension on the drum besides a BFH, depending on your drum setup(non abs) has 2 phillips screws that need to be pulled and than the 32mm MUST come off, on the ABS drums there is a 10mm bolt in the backing plate underneath the brake line that must be removed and the 32mm nut also, just unpry the bent in spot it was bent to keep the nut from backin off. Also before u try and pull the drum press the brake pedal down 10 times as it will release any pressure that will hold the shoes to close to the drum as to where it wont slide off. And chaulking nut TQ spec is 145ftIbs remember to grease up the bearings and shaft before reassembly.

How do you remove the rear brake drum?

Before you begin make sure your emergency brake is off.

1. Jack up the car and remove rear tires.
2. With a 13mm socket and ratchet remove the 4 bolts that are on the back of the hub assembly. (You will need an extension and a universal joint adapter)
3. Pull the drum off and the spindle will come off with it, giving you access to the shoes, wheel cylinder, hold down hardware, etc... (you may need to adjust your brake shoes so the drum will slide off easier.)

Do not undo the nut in the middle of the drum (under the dust cap) unless you absolutely need to turn the drum or replace the drum as the threads on the spindle are known to strip very easily. Should you need to take it off the socket for the spindle nut is a 30mm.

Can't remove rear hub to get at brakes

You may have to heat the outer part of the hub to get this off. For some reason, the car companies seem to consider the rear axle components as 'throwaway'. Too much trouble to use a large nut and cotter pin to hold the wheel on and allow the bearings to be greased. We had a Dodge Caravan do this and the mechanic had a terrible time getting it off!

Need to remove rear brakes on a 2005 ford focus

Some people will tell you to remove the four bolt behind the drum but i think it is much easier to remove the middle bolt with a 30mm ratchet. But be careful to torque correctly the nut in place. I think it's 140 lbs i'm really not sure. If you do it by the four bolt, be careful with the abs sensor, i break mine lol

1990 626 Mazda rear drum brakes

This "large nut" you are talking about is holding a drum. Usually over him is a cover. Use big screwdriver and hammer to remove cover, gently strike from all sides, and when you remove it you will approach to a big nut. Pay attention that under the drum is a whole breaks sistem. After you remove the nut gently strike from the rear, from all sides (left, right, up and down). Drum will fall off.

Brake drums

Try using a hub puller. I used one with sucess on my 2004 Aveo. The Aveo has studs that are installed in the brake drum (rather than in a hub behind the drum). I used a hub puller with arms that bolted to the wheel studs with a center screw that drives down on the spindle (visible after the drums dust cap is removed). Remove the cap and the spindle nut, install the puller, and a few turns are all that are needed to pop the drum off.
