Starter keeps turning even when key is turned off

I replaced my neighbors starter on his 1988 ford pickup. We went ahead and replaced the old fender mounted starter relay (3 post) also.
The new starter relay has 4post (s and I small and 2 large post. I connected the wires like the way the old one was. anyways- started fine, we let it idel for about 5min. I shut if off and waited a sec or two, then started it again. The starter kept trying to start over and over even when I turned the key to off. I HAD TO UNPLUG THE NEGATIVE TO STOP IT. I waited a minit and connected the negative and same thing, starter tryed to start motor without the key in the ignition. Is the wiring different on the older 3 post starter relays compared to the newer one's?
Thanks, IVAN

Curious, do you have an autostart installed? I had that happen that the Autostart shorted and just kept telling my starter to continue cranking

hey johnny it's definitely your starter relay it's locked inside and is sending power from the battery directly through the relay from one cable to the other straight to the battery that's why it continues to keep starting this happened to me and the starter motor just kept turning and my truck would not shut off

I have a 1988 2wd pickup and the starter won't

starter wont turn or engages the flext plate, flywheel and still wont turn engine over?if this is the case you have a seized up motor, but if it doesnt even click check signal wire from ignition switch for power when you turn the key to crank.if no power your ignition switch,park/neutral safety switch(clutch switch if manual trans) or wrongly installed wired could be the problem.

STARTER WON'T STOP

If its a new starter check and see that the wires are hooked up right, could be time for a new starter, or starter relay on the fender well, or the ignition switch is bad.

91 ford ranger 2.9 super cab: Starter keeps turning/cranking

With fords you have to have to battery tip top condition (a must).
Now when you refer to the starter solenoid, are you talking about the relay on the passenger side fender well. If so, start there.
With the starter wire or trigger wire disconnected, Start running your tests.
Find out if its something to do with the trigger wire or if it has to do with the relay.

Won't start

There could be a short in or near the ignition switch.
