I bought it a couple of days ago for 800 bucks. It has a knocking noise that isn't always consistent in volume. It sounds like a combination of lifters and rod knock so I'm confused. I put some seafoam into the gas tank and engine block and am still running it. When the car is driving, every so often that seemed more often than not today that the knocking noise was getting quieter until the engine was under load then it would be the same. Is this rod knock? or just lifters? Or the beginning of rod knock? I'm hoping the engine isn't blown but if it is, I intend on swapping the engine out with another one. I don't want to drive it just in case if it is rod knock, but I'd like to try to difinitively diagnose the problem before jumping into replacing a motor that may just have stuck or broken lifters.
Piston noise makes a noise that goes away when the engine warms most times, rod knocks get much louder as the engine is loaded, Keep driving it and see what blows? Have you checked the oil pressure with a mechanical gage?
Testimonial: "I have not checked it, on the guage in the car, it shows its getting oil pressure. just above the center of the guage between h and l. It doesn't get much louder but it does get louder when i accelerate."

Headlight module under the dash. It is the size of a box of crackers, not a small part.
SOURCE: cylinder 4 misfire on a 2000 crown victoria interceptor
first cylinder 4 is the last on the passenger side . first pull the coil out and check if there is water where the plug is. if there is take the water out and dry up the coil. if you find water you got a crack manifold or a bad intake manifold gasket. if there is no water replace the coil. good luck
SOURCE: 2003 Silverado 1500 knocking when I start the engine
This is normal with the 2000 to 2003 silverado 1500 after about 70,000 miles. It is not a worry. after truck warms and the oil has lubricated the engine, the tic noise should stop.
SOURCE: engine knocking noise in 2000 saab 9-3 SE?
It's a common problem with these cars i am actually fixing mine as of now. That car is all about oil pressure and when it is low you'll start to get a tap and or what sounds like a knock due to the lifters not having enough pressure. Try taking your oil pan off and check your oil pick up line going from the oil pan to the turbo. A lot of times it gets a lot of sludge build up and makes the pressure little to none. If that looks clear check the slump inside the oil pan and see if that has sludge build up. Well hope this helped
