Sounds like you need to bleed out the system. Even the smallest of air bubbles with give you troubles! Good luck!

SOURCE: is there an adjustment for

Yes, the box is adjustable. The front end guy can do that adjustment. I hate the condition that you describe. Are you using Light Truck (LT) tires. Car tires have softer sidewalls and also contribute. I have a Mercedes, also and it steered WORSE than my van. Van had truck tires, put tires with more sidewall plies on Mercedes and was VERY happy, tire guys thought I was nuts, but this issue causes driving stress.

SOURCE: rack and pinion? have play in wheel no sign of leaks new power steering pump installed

Hi Gunny, If your vehicle is fitted with rack and pinion steering also check the rack ends for play. The rack ends are the rods which the tie rod ends screw onto. The other end fits onto the rack of the rack and pinion. To work on those you will need to remove the rubber boots and loosen the locking washer, they can then be loosened with a wrench. If they are worn the play will be evident in the steering. When replacing them also replace the rubber boots. If the boots are worn and road grime and dust enters, you will see leakage from the rack and pinion in the near future. I always thought the Dakota was fitted with a steering box? Regards John

My 4 runner suddenly started steering hard what might be causing this

You either have a failing power steering hydraulic pump or the steering rack and pinion unit has a seal leak and needs to be replaced. Try installing a can of power steering sealer from an auto parts store it may help.

Re Nissan

didnt specify vehicle or area of residence --generic answer ---you can look up in this link for all nissian recalls --the steering support bolt has nothing to do with your power steering going --but certian nissians do have a recall on powering steering issues --recalls can also be for a certian number and or location of sale --lot more recall on vehicles are done to vehicles up in the north east due to weather conditions rusting of components ect --also besides this link you can enter your vehicle problems and check on recalls and the major complaints that other owners have had https://www.nissanusa.com/recalls-vin/#/#/Home

What is causeing loose play in my steeringwheel when i turn it left or right?

If there is no shaking or clunking you can probably rule out tie rods or ball joints, have your steering box checked for a worn or damaged worm gear, this can be adjusted

Loose mitsubishi galant power steering gear

Free play is usually preset so excessive play suggests a possible problem. DON'T drive the car if there is a lot of free play. Jack the car up AND ONTO AXLE STANDS! Your going to be shaking the car around.
Rock the front wheel, using a bit of force, from top to bottom and then left to right. Your feeling for movement and listening for clicks and 'clonks'. This is to check the ball joints and wheel bearing. Do this both sides.
Remove the road wheels and re-check the rack, rods and arms. One of these might be faulty. There might even be a loose fitting somewhere.
*Note* there are rare occasions where 'new' parts can be faulty before fitting.

Get the steering adjusted by a professional. You are talking about several different engineering diciplines coming together and they must be adjusted to complement each other. There is mechanical and hydraulic.
