98 Escort 2.0 ran good til now.It started to lose speed and slowed almost to a stop acting like a gas restriction.Turned it off a few minutes to look for problem and it ran normal again about 3 miles.
Had to shut off every 3 miles and wait few minutes to get home.Replaced fuel filter, relay and Coil.No codes or vacuum leak. After 30 miles, same problem. Now problem filling gas tank. Are these related?
Do you have any codes in the ECM ? Have you checked for any vacuum leaks ? Can you add more detail information as to when it first began to have issues and what have you done to correct this problem.

Check or replace fuel filter again. You could have had a lot of sediment in your tank. If it ran good for a week, that's where you need to start figuring out what was replaced during that time. If you can, check fuel pressure at schraeder valve on fuel rail.
(if engine is good, not overheated ) its only 1 of 2 things. lost spark (do a spark test using , yes, a test good spark plug) if spark is good on all cyl then check fueling, if spark plugs not soaked in fuel (tips) then try test fuel. if soaked, the op guide says, hold throttle fully open (depressed 100%) this cuts INJECTIONS 100% and you start a flooding motor)
try this test
place in neutral with the park brake on
start the engine if it idles alright put your foot on the brake
if it falters or plays up ,it is a vacuum leak in the brake booster
replace the booster
There are usually return springs but it could just be that your car coast a long time when in high gear before it starts to slow down. My Jeep is the same way, if I'm running at 55 I can coast for a few miles before I slow down very much.
i know the camp verde hill of which you speak , last vehicle in the shop with that same scenario , after doing everything possible including a catalyst check , as we could not duplicate the problem , we replaced fuel pump at owners request and next trip he confirmed it was a fix .
1998 ford escort sport engine started making a tapping noise and engine light started flashing. Had oil and water at normal level.
Car has 110,000 miles. Been serviced regularly!
