I have a 96 jeep grand cherokee and this just started the other day. when I left off the gas or drive down a hill, it will come back down to the vents but will go back to the defrost when I get back on the gas.

Sounds like a vacuum problem.Listen for hiss noise under hood and under dash. may have a bad vacuum diaphram that controls blend door or leaking vacuum line.

OK I have the same vehicle and it is designed to do this to help keep from overheating while going uphill and also to help give the engine more power when accelerating.

You have a vacuum under the hood that is broken, sucked together,or disconnected,it will be going into the firewall.

I have a 2003 cherokee laredo that keeps blowing air out of the defroster vents. Occasionally it goes back to the fron vents, but soon switches back to defrosters. The air is cold, so no problem with that.

If you have a manual control , you may a a vaccum leak at the firewall under the hood. when you give it gas and the vents go from the floor to defrost . listen for hissing, and cracked / broken vaccum lines

2001 jeep grand cherokee wont blow air through vents

there is a flap to redirect the air flow under the dash, it may be an item like a pen :) that has dropped down the vent opening stopping it from moving to redirect the air ... failing that, one of the motors/cables that operate the flap has failed

2001 Grand Cherokee blower goes to defrost under acceleration

You have a vacuum leak. Look under the dash and check the placement of the vacuum hoses that activate the vent doors. One or more may have slipped or may be cracked.
