It is not a serial number it is the casting number for the block they started producing in 1996 and still going
it being a two bolt it was mostly used in trucks

Where is the location of the engine serial number for Chevrolet Tahoe 2005 4.8L vortec engine? And is it visible and accessable form the engine bay without removing the engine?

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is located on the left side rear of the engine block (1) and is typically a nine digit number stamped or laser-etched onto the engine at the vehicle assembly plant.

I just purchased a used Chevy small block, Cast # 10243878 which states it's a 1996-1997 305. Can you help me ID the serial number which is 1M03291606?

I can easily cross over the block/casting number but the serial numbers are not listed. The only real difference in small blocks is the bore and stroke and the number of main bearing bolts, if you plan to built up the engine you need a 4 bolt main cap engine block

What is the 355939 chevy block ?

A quick google search does not show this number. If the 5th # were a 0, it would be a 265 or 305, 2 bolt small block. There are books listing more complete casting # information available from Peterson publishers I believe.

What motor came stock in a 1989 chevrolet

The eighth digit in the VIN number on the trucks dash (view from outside the truck on the drivers side) is the engine code. I believe M is a 350 and P is a 305.

Head Swap

The 2.8 is a 60 degree engine, and the 4.3 a 90 degree engine. Meaning the bank of the cylinders in relation to the center line of the engine. If you were asking about a 3.8 and 4.3 I'd say yes you could, as each of these is based on a 305, and 350 respectively. I don't believe the 2.8 and 4.3 have the same cylinder head bolt patterns to allow correct mounting to the block. Additionally you have to be sure about valve opening clearance requirements using the larger cylinder head because of the smaller bore of the 2.8. The 4.3 heads have larger valves, and may not clear the block surrounding the bore. The chamber of the 4.3 heads might extend onto the flat surface of the 2.8 block which is an engineering no-no due to hot spots/dieseling and other problems you would design into this monsterous mating.
I like the way you think though. Chevrolet has been doing this since they introduced the first small block back in the 50's.
You are right about the 2.8 being a dud. I had one, and it couldn't get out of its own way. You might be better finding a good low mileage 4.3, and grab the mounts along with the vehicle you got the engine from. Also be sure you get the computer, and harness. If that vehicle is injected and computer controlled, and yours is not, there would be a whole nother host of issues to deal with that you don't sound like you would wanting to encounter. In that case you might as well drop a small block in, because the issues would be similar.

Can the engine serial number lead to year model identification on a GMC Jimmy?

In one word NO! The number on the block mean very little as far as the year! But GM is one of the better when it comes to swapping parts! Never heard of this before! Sure like to know what parts are not fitting?? Frankster016

Swap a 86 350 into a 91 camaro with a 305 TBI

good idea, use 350 block,305 heads &intake.the reason is, if the 91 305 heads are 4 bolts in center of valve cover the are what you call vortec heads, they have better flow.the tbi will respond better &still have bettergas milage than old style heads.the 350 block will add more overall power.you shouldnt have any problems doing so,you will notice a diff.have fun, good luck.
