2001 jeep grand cherokee leaking transmission fluid. It's not gushing out, just barely dripping when stopped and the tranny fluid level seems fine when checked (hot). It seems to be coming from the rear side of the pan around where it meets the transfer case. I'm thinking it's the gasket but just wanted some input. Also, the fluid looks fine (pink) and doesn't smell burnt. Also, if it is the seal is it okay to keep driving it for a while as long as I'm checking the fluid level periodically? Thanks!

sounds the transmission gov. pressure solenoid in the transmission needs replacing

it could be the transmission pan gasket that is leaking. if so replace gasket and refill with tranny fluid to proper level.

Try lubricating the wheel hub bearings...

The fluid that is inside of your torque converter, which is located in the bell housing is your transmission fluid.. If your tranny fluid level is good, then the fluid inside of your torque converter is good...Now if you are leaking fluid from that area, it could be either your front seal that is inside the bell housing, or your rear main oil seal......

have the same problem with 1999 mazda pickup try flushing the tranny and put in a new filter replace one quart of tranny fluid with some lucas trans fix and see if this helps it any, was told the tranny will need to be rebuilt.

Check transmission fluid level, then look at transmission linkage. Some are in a place where they can be bumped around and knocked out of place. Tweek the shifter a little on both sides of the resting position when you shift. If the noise goes away. It is probably linkage related. If you can sample the tranny fluid, check for burnt smell and or metal flakes. Aamco will check it free but dont let them sell you repairs as preventative measures. They will try.

As I said, trans fluid keeps the internal components "alive"... Low fluid level can cause burning of internal clutches, premature hardening of seals (essential to proper transmission of fluid pressure) as well as lubrication of necessary gear components such as planetary gear set (which can cause whine etc. which you now have) All of these components rely upon a constant flow of fluid for both cooling and lubrication. Depending upon how low and how long these parts had interrupted fluid flow, directly influences how much damage was done. I take no joy in telling you that you may have damaged your unit, I'd be far happier if I could give you a quick, inexpensive fix. But based upon what you have said, If I was working hands-on with this problem, I would make the recommendation I've already made. There are pressure tests etc that can be done at a transmission shop to verify to some degree of certainty what is going on within your unit. Hopefully they may find something other than what I've said. At this point though, it is wise to have it checked out by a professional, before you become stranded at a time when you can least afford to be.

HI, this is just a pan seal that as failed to do its job due to age or defective nature. Once this faulty pan gasket is changed, the leak will stop.

Check the condition of the tranny oil on the dipstick. If it's black and smelly, the tranny clutches might be worn out. Make sure you have enough fluid in there first. Check the fluid with the car engine running and the tranny in park. The level should be between the 2 marks.
