Does it have a factory alarm? Do you have a second set of keys, if so try the extra key first. Your keys should have come with a extra little chip not in the key that tells what resistor they need to replace the key. Your key has a resistor in it that allows the car to start so it could just be the key. If it's not the key that needs replaced then the alarm module under the dash is bad. Unless the resistor in the key did in fact go bad which I have never heard of happening, then that would be a cheap fix. If it doesn't work with the other key then the security module under the dash is bad but can be bypassed but you won't have an alarm. It's really a very easy fix. I've heard of the ignition and/or key getting dirty after prolonged use and have been told that you can clean the key by rubbing and eraser over the resistor a few times and then spraying an electronic cleaner in the ignition and inserting the key in and out while it's still wet. Haven't heard of that happening much at all though. Battery has to be disconnected to do that though or could cause more problems. Electronic cleaner dries really fast and wouldn't harm anything. If you want to spend $10 bucks to give that a try it might be worth a shot. The right way to fix it is the replacing the key or alarm module if it's not just dirt film. Theres a panel under the stearing column that you remove but I will have to do some checking to tell you where the module box is located but I doubt you want to do this yourself. I think the dealership has to match the key to the module unless you have the chip? Not sure if they can just use the bad key or not. Dealerships charge between $60 and $100 just to pull the vehicle in the door so pray you have that little chip or that they can just use the key. But CALL a dealership first and ask if they can use a bad key without having the little I.D. chip. I guess to answer your question YES it could very well be the key itself. Hope this helps some!

You may want to check manual, or call dealer for disarm procedure, but some are disarmed by key in drivers door, (lock and/or unlock, some are passenger door) Try key in drivers door, turn left then right.

cbridges2232,
Any luck with your keyless remote issue? I'm having the exact same problem with my Ford F150 CrewCab after car battery replacement.
