The best thing i can tell you If you never have replaced a vehicle motor and do not have the hoist's and or all the tools at home, then have someone do it and pay them. You can get a used motor from a salvage yard and have a mechanic replace it usually for less than buying a new motor it will likely take him 3 days or so if he knows what he is doing,

Have body control system checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . On newer vehicles like yous ,everything set's a code now a days . Probably a electrical circuit problem or door ajar switch . Looking at data inputs to SJB - smart junction box , fords BCM - body electronics control module , on a scan tool will show what the problem is . The dealer I work at charge's $ 23.00 to hook - up factory scan tool . Or you could take a chance and change the door ajar switch . Would need to take inside door panel off to get at it .

the major problem with fitting different engines is the transmission housing compatibility
if the bolt pattern is different, the cost of obtaining an adaptor plate makes the different engine fitment expensive
there is a technical division in ford motor company that you can contact for advice and they will be able to advise which engines have the same bolt patterns that will allow the change over
of course the other method is to change the engine / transmission as an assembly so if you want to put a inline six in use the inline six transmission as well

Does yours have Electronic Shift on the Fly (ESOF) Operation The electronic shift on the fly (ESOF) system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4H mode at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph). To engage or disengage 4L range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL. The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front driveline when shifting from 2WD to 4H mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. When the shift motor reaches the desired position, as determined by the contact plate position inputs to the GEM, power to the shift relays and motors will be removed. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the mainshaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.

After reading this material I would not think it was the switch . Maybe an input problem to the GEM module .

Feature Inputs:
  • 4WD Mode Switch (various resistances; go to Table 1).
  • Contact Plate Position Inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open; go to Table 4).
  • Output Speed Shaft (OSS) Sensor (Sinusoid Signal: 0.7V-20V, 2.2 Hz/mph).
  • Brake Input (battery voltage when brake is depressed, open circuit when not activated).
  • Transmission Range Sensor (grounded when transmission is in NEUTRAL, open circuit otherwise).
  • Start/Clutch Depressed Input (go to Table 3).
  • I would take it and have it check for codes !

According to this page, If you have the 4R100 transmission then your only replacement while keeping the trans is the 5.4L.
If you have the 4R70W then you can also use the 4.3L V6 and the 4.6L Triton V8. You may have to change computer transmission shift points but between the two Tritons it probably doesn't make much difference.

Then you still have a poor connection, it may be inside the battery cable, do a voltage drop test.

there are different speedo gears in the transmission available that will allow for some ratio changes in the diff so check with a dealer spares to see if any are available for your vehicle
when you say smaller tire , is it a smaller diameter rim that was fitted
if that is the case by fitting a larger tire case may get back closer to the correct reading
by that I mean for example a 195 25 r14 case can be replaced by a 195 95 r14 case as the difference is in the 25 to 95 measurement
the 25 measurement makes for the rim almost touching the ground where the 95 dimension stands the rim well up off the road and because of that the distance covered in 1 revolution is far different to the distance covered in 1 revolution by the 25 size tire
that solution may put the car back too high for your back problem so if the gears replacement is not possible , then a last solution may be to find an instrument repair shop and have the gauge re- calibrated to the correct reading according to the speedo gears in the transmission
if it is auto with a VSS unit that signals the speedo there may be changes in that area that are possible
