What would cause a gasoline odor when I'm driving? No visible leaks and not overfilling the tank.

I can smell gasoline when I'm driving mostly on a short trip. No leaks and not overfilling the tank.

The thing that really gets me is that I have taken it to 2 different mechanics and the dealership and they couldn't detect the problem. I guess they couldn't smell the gas when I brought it in. Not happy!

Could be anything. Bad gas cap, evaporation canister bad, bad hose, engine running rich etc. No way to give you an accurate diagnosis simply too many possibilities.

In the past had the gas cap situation because had the check engine sign on and 2 places did the diagnostics and said the slight vapor leak. Changed gas cap and the check engine light is gone. The gas smell is still every once in a while but not good.

01 crown vic strong gas odor

Call for service now. You don't want to mess with leaking gas.

First thing, make sure your gas cap is on tight. And that you are not overfilling the car at the station or spilling gas. Assuming you have checked that,

The main causes of gas odor are flooding when starting, a leaking oil filler cap, broken or leaking spark plugs, or a leak in the gas tank/filler/fuel lines. That's the one you should be worried about. I had a car with a cracked gas filler, gas pooled on top of the tank and later caught on fire: the car was completely engulfed within 45 seconds and i was lucky to get out alive.

Gasoline Smell in Car 5 Common Causes

Why does it smell like gas in my car? Whether you love or can't stand the odor of gasoline, a vehicle that smells like gas most likely has a leak somewhere within the fuel delivery system. Since gasoline is flammable, this presents a major hazard and requires an immediate fix.

No service engine light? A loose gas cap will set a light.
You may want to inspect your fuel filler neck and anything close. For a long while its not uncommon for a person to report the fuel odor issue and have it be where some low life cut a filler neck or puntured a tank to steal fuel. But if that were the case there would usually be a service engine or gas cap light as the systems now days monitor pressures so they can detect leaks in the Evap system.

When you mention a smell though under the hood, do you think the smell could be exhaust? I have seen those manifolds crack. or maybe just a leak from a gasket or exhaust donut.

If I were you ,I would remove the plentum and make sure the injectors are not leaking onto the intake manifold and creating a pocket of fuel, witch could cause a engine fire while driving.

91 Maxima Gasoline odor when I first start the car

If it is running fine, the busted bolt isn't the source of the gasoline smell. The intake manifold has vacuum, so the smell wouldn't be getting out, air would be going in, and a vacuum leak would give you poor idling. The exhaust manifold wouldn't have much raw gasoline smell. But it would have loud noise if the broken bolt were causing an exhaust leak.

Check that the vapor recovery line is not broken or disconnected. The hose connectors get cracked. If that were broken, it would cause a gasoline smell after the car has been sitting, especially if it has been sitting in the sun, heat driving gasoline vapor out of the tank. It is supposed to condense in the vapor canister, but some escapes if the line is broken. If it is broken, driving would **** out the gasoline from the line and the wind would dissipate the smell.

Or it could be a leaking injector. With the injector cover off, engine idling and cool, you can visually look for raw gas around the injectors and injector rail connections.

Hope this helps.

Strong odor of gasoline vapors

do u have a check engine light on? do u overfill the tank? which is to say when the filler nozzle clicks off do u still try to put more fuel in? in any event u most likely have a overloaded carbon canister, pull the canister out and check it for gasoline saturation, the carbon canister is located under the car in a tray near the fuel tank.

Gas odor when at stops sign or parking in garage

I recently had the same problem. It turned out that the fuel regulator on the engine at the left side just above the intake manifold had an intermitent leak. The gas leaking was not always visible so I had the regulator changed and that solved the problem.

Gasoline odor

Oh yes there is and there is a charcol canister up under the hood that captures the vapors if the canister is full you could smell fuel.
You will need a shop that has a SMOKE MACHINE to find the leak in the evaporative emissions plumbing from the tank to the engine compartment.
