Not sure if your 97 model has the distributor cap or spark box...The distributor Cap can be cracked (not seen) and cause this problem. Hope this helps.

the high humidity (water) is attacking your electrical starting system, whens the last time you changed your spark plug wires , distributor cap & rotor ? how about your fuel & air filters ? cleaned your battery terminals ? try it , it will help !!!!!!!!!
It is probably water has gotten into one of the sensors and needs be disconnected and dried out. the only way to distinguish which sensor is to have a tech connect a diagnostic meter to the vehicle.
Get a can of starting fluid from the parts store, next time it fails to start spray the fluid into the air intake to the engine, if it starts you have a failing electric fuel pump inside the gads tank.
Hi, the most common reason for a car not starting in the rain is found in the spark plugs. Wire insulation can wear thin and this causes the voltage to arc to the metal of the car engine rather then going into the spark plug. You can check for this visually by opening the hood when it's wet outside and trying to start the car. You might be able to see an arc from the spark plug wires.
Secondly check the distributor cap. Take a good physical examination of your distributor cap for any signs of a cracks. Also remove the distributor cap and check the inside of it for moisture. If you find any, wipe it clean; it won't work while wet.
well i would start buy geting the rain water of the top of motor so i would start at hood seal if bad but new hood seal in you may have to go to dealer for it then if the spash gard is missing under car i would replace it with new one then see if car hard to start next time it rain should have no water at top of motor can couse all typ of isuse hope this helps
