Sounds like a faulty sensor, if the actual temp is 195/215. The ICM is processing the information it receives from the sensor and performs accordingly. A complete diagnostic scan would be helpful in determining the proper repairs needed to correct the problem.
Good luck...i hope this helps, please rate me a fixya.

It's a small resitor behind instrument cluster. It was dry soldered at factory. Common fault. Take out instrument cluster. And touch resistors with solder iron. There is a vid somewhere on you tube. I've must have done 20 of these in the last year. Save money and have a GI. It's not hard. Nick

Please can you help why only after about a mile the engine is red hot but temp gauge is only showing middle. is this normal. YEAR 2001 WITH SERVICE HISTORY ONLY HAD SIX MONTH.

When you say "red hot" do you mean actually glowing? If so, you'd have serious trouble. If you mean only hot to the touch, that's normal - these engines run pretty warm. And yes, the gauge in the center is normal - the OEM temp gauge is a dummy gauge, only meant to show you that it's either cold, overheated, or mainly OK. Use your oil temp gauge as your main indicator - at least it's graded numerically and you can actually see the oil temp.
