So far you have done the right thing. Next question is has anyone been under the hood just pryor to this light comong on. Possible something was knocked loose.
If not then you need to have it diagnosed. You have a small EVAP ( fuel fumes) leaking out when being tested by the computer. It could be anywhere from the engine compartment to the tot of the tank to the filler neck.
Or it may be a pressure sensor that is out of specs or a purge or vent solenoid.
If you dont have the proper equipment then it need to go get diagnosed.

Driving home last night... gas cap light comes on. I tightened gas cap, restarted car and light goes off...started car this morning and now check engine light on

The "gas cap light" actually does not mean the gas cap is loose or defective. It is telling you there is a leak in the fuel system somewhere, usually a vapor line or stuck or defective valve. Not very often is it the gas cap that causes the light to come on.Time for a scan and a smoke test to fine the leak.

Check engine light comes on

yes. the rubber gaskets do wear out. on most vehicles the gas cap
should be tightened 'til it"clicks". you probably can't tell from the
"appearance" but if you tighten 'til it clicks then drive for awshile and still
get the same code, the next step is a NEW gas cap/

Change my oil now engine service light is on

Will have to be scanned to find out what happened. Check your gas cap to see if you tightened it. That will trip the light but will go out after a few driving cycles after it is tightened.

A lot of part stores will scan it for free and tell you what the code is.

Engine check light comes on and stays on for awhile then goes off. Dometimes when I fill the gas tank the check engine light comes on. is something to do with the gas cap or the instrument lights.

IF IT COME ON EVERY TIME YOU GET GAS.GAS CAP HAS BAD SEAL IT MORE LIKELY YOUR PROBLEM BUT LET AUTO ZONE SCAN IT FREE TO SEE WHAT TROUBLE CODE YOU ARE GETTING.

On a 2006 chevy impala it tells you to tighten the gas cap ,then when you do, we shut the car off. Then check engine light comes on. Where is the sensor located.

There is no sensor for a loose gas cap. What is happening is that the evaporative emission system is sensing a "Large Leak". Usually code p0455. The computer sees this as the most probable cause is a loose gas cap depending on several factors it looks at. You would need to clear the code(s) and see if that was the problem. If the light comes back on, then you have a problem in the system that will not let it seal. Possible solenoid problem, leaking hose / line, etc.

Check engine light/ dash message "tighten gas cap"

I can't tell you where yours is but I can tell you how to find it. It's a plastic (sometimes metal) cylinder about the size of a normal coffee can. it has a flat vacuum fitting on the top with usually three or four hoses going to it. Normally it is located low against one of the fenders and can usually be seen easier than you can reach it with your hand. on the bottom you will see a cloth filter. If you can find something like that, you have found it.
I would also check the lines and hoses going to the fuel tank. Any leak in the vapor recovery system will show up as a cap leak which is only a part of the system. (just did one on a Pontiac GA with a similar problem)
