Harmonic balancer went bad, replaced it and crank sensor (also adjusted sensor) now have a ticking coming from area. Car now stalls intermittently, also hesitates on heavy acceleration. Could this be the timing gear issue that GM had (neoprine coating on gears)?

    Rubber dry-rot and tore half out... pulley shifted and was catching on the safty

    Engine is the 3800 (VIN C). After checking/adjusting the crank sensor, the light tick went away. Still had a hesitation when accelerating. Heard a noise coming from the timing cover. Removed cover and found tensioner was broke. Decided to replace the gears/chain. Noise is gone... :)

    Missed your post July 15 there was a problem with the system...What you did is what I would have suggested (Why I asked exactly what had happened to the pulley)...glad you figured it out!!!

I have a chevy impala with 3.4 engine i recently changed harmonic balancer pully but didnt change the sensor now my car mis fires when i accelerate. could it be i need tochange the sensor.

Crank sensor is hitting balancer. One of the interupter blades may be bent. 3800's do not have timing chain or gear problems. Now a 3.8 will. Does yours say 3800 on top of engine? These ar two different engines.

How do i replace a crank shaft sensor on a 2001 buick lesabre
The crankshaft sensor is located behind the harmonic balancer. There is a special tool you can rent/loan from your local auto parts store in order to remove the harmonic balancer. Once it is off 2 bolt hold the crankshaft position sensor in place. Note there could be many other factors causing your engine to stall or not restart; but those crank sensors do tend to go out on those engines.

POSSIBILITY - ALTERNATOR BAD or going BAD it' not generating power to keep the battery charged therefore causing all Electronics to slowly fail as the battery loses all life ?
Need more Info and Why was a HARMONIC BALANCER needed? The obvious of course it was bad , But you are driving a MAZDA and a harmonic balancer isn't just a harmonic balancer it has to be the EXACT HARMONIC BALANCER , they can look identical and still be different . What was the REASONING for the replacement?NOT A COMMON PROBLEM.

It sounds like a lifter i was told it was the harmonic balancer by several people i replaced it car stick making ticking noise and picks up speed slow
I am curious why they said harmonic balancer and you replaced it, there is a crank sensor near the harmonic balancer was it rattling or loose they have a tendency to get loose,the harmonic is the big main pulley when that breaks because it is vulcanized then yes it tick and your car looses power.You check sparkplugs for being loose and not being tighten up,check the air filter too,I am sticking with the Harmonic balancer this time remove the drive belt but dont do it too long or it will overheat just for 2 minutes maximum see if the noise goes away. 2 minutes only battery wont charge also

well you might want to replace the crank sensor on the car. those engines are known for bad crank sensors.

Yes it would and will make the car not start. Your crank sensor is located behind your harmonic balancer, which is the large pulley that turns all the belts. THe one that is coming off the crank shaft.

Harmonic balancer bad car runs real bad
The harmonic balancer controls the triggering of the combined crankshaft/camshaft sensor. This controls ignition plus fuel injection. Replace the balancer and adjust the sensor or replace it if damaged.

I have a 1997 Buick Regal LS my wifes car she says when she is driving down the road the car will lose power and then it comes right back it also sometimes will not start. The check engine light comes on...
P0300 is a random misfire code not a Crank Sensor Code. Alot of cars don't rely on the crank sensor for fuel and ignition timing but simply to check misfires. However, some cars do need the crank signal to stay running. It's possible that the sensor has an intermittent short or open in it and the car is dying when the signal is lost. If i remember correctly the crank sensor on a 3.8 is behind the harmonic balancer. So that would require removing the drive belt and balancer to get to it. Not a real challenging procedure but it will likely require the use of a harmonic balancer puller.

It sounds like you have a bad battery if it isn't turning over fast, and you are getting rapid clicking.

The harmonic balancer went out, it sat for a while until i got the money for parts. it has been put on and the car wont start! is there any way to prime as it has sat for a good while
The crank sensor may have been damaged, hit by balancer and needs to be replaced and adjusted correctly.
