the thermostat is located where the upper radator hose comes off the engine there are two bolts or nuts remove hose and remove housing you will see the thermostat when you do clean old gasket material off block and reverse removal procedure

These are special tools that are made just for that job,If you are going to do the water pump yourself,you can go to Autozone parts store and rent the tools,That way you won't be rounding anything off or doing further damage.
