Yes the early subaru's all use the same front and rear axles
Fronts are easy to change. rears are not.
The only difference in the early style axles that use pin on inner joints are the outer joints with abs rings.
Probably cv joint they will start that way when on the straight away you wont hear it but on the turn you will means that the bearings in the cv joint are bad check this out and let me know also please rate my assistance if it was helpful thank you.
Check your half shaft. Look for broken boots that would be a sign that you have leaked all the grease out. You can also put it up on jack stands to check for play in the axle itself.
Hi, see if this site helps, it explains how to access the battery (who designs these things???). Let me know how it goes. http://www.ppbb.com/boards/ppbbphp/showflat.php?Board=ARCHIVES&Number=1225855
Unless the boot was torn yesterday, the joint becomes contaminated with road dirt and begins to wear quickly. consider changing the axle...it's quicker and easier and more reliable. You can find instructions in haynes or chilton...basics are, remove brake assembly and hub bearing, pull axle through hole where bearing was and replace with new. If axle housing has any control units on it, they must be disengaged before pulling axle. Any questions along the way? Just ask and someone will help! good luck
the release cable is behind the rear bumper on the nearside below the tail lamp. if you remove the inner arch liner and heatshield for exhaust enough to get your hand up there to reach and pull wire as you cant remove bumper without openingthe boot.
