The system is generally protected by a fuse. Your car handbook should tell you where and which fuse it is.
If a new fuse doesn't cure the problem it will be necessary to check the live and ground at the motor as a first step. Generally the motor has a constant supply and the switch provides a variety of ground paths from the motor for maximum speed and from the motor via the speed control resistor.
In Europe and other places most recent heater motors are also protected by a thermal fuse fitted close to the motor. This replaceable component is considered by vehicle manufacturers to be an integral part of the motor.
