There is a switch unit on the transmission that reads the position of the shifter. This fault can be from damaged wiring or a poor connection in the plug from years or corrosion and dirt. Locate the plug and disconnect it. Use electrical contact cleaner or coca cola to clean the pins on both ends of the connection. Reconnect it and clear the fault. Then cycle the shifter from park to 1st and back at least 3 times. If the fault returns replace the unit. https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.subaruforester.org%2Fvbulletin%2Fattachments%2Ff88%2F37217d1337467837-failure-start-diagnosis-help-inhibitor-switch.pdf&ei=yw0oVa7WDYWlsAWD0IIY&usg=AFQjCNGB80w-7SFTqVhTssWan9-FJaAG5Q&sig2=Fshz5kP1DIT8T4W-n4j1fA&bvm=bv.90491159,d.b2w

How to test the neutral safety switch on a 2010 GMC Sierra

The best way, easiest way, with a professional or factory scan tool . Check input data to the TCM - transmission control module. The long drawn out way, viewing wiring diagrams, then using a DVOM - digital volt ohmmeter an test electrical circuits one by one. Check out videos on youtube.

The transmission range (TR) switch is part of the park/neutral position (PNP) and backup lamp switch assembly, which is externally mounted on the transmission manual shaft. The TR switch contains four internal switches that indicate the transmission gear range selector lever position. The transmission control module (TCM) supplies ignition voltage to each switch circuit. As the gear range selector lever is moved, the state of each switch may change, causing the circuit to open or close. An open circuit or switch indicates a high voltage signal. A closed circuit or switch indicates a low voltage signal. The TCM detects the selected gear range by deciphering the combination of the voltage signals. The TCM compares the actual voltage combination of the switch signals to a TR switch combination chart stored in memory.

2010 Chevy equinox shifter in park but light says the car is in reverse

Probably the transmission internal mode switch . But , without hooking up a scan tool an checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes an checking input data from the switch to the TCM - transmission control module i'd only be guessing . You don't want to waste money just replacing part's . Have a qualified repair shop check it out. Need factory service info an professional type scan tool .

Circuit/System Description
The transmission manual shift shaft switch assembly, also known as the Internal Mode Switch (IMS), is a sliding contact switch attached to the manual shift shaft inside the transmission case. The Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch is integrated into the IMS and connects to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) lead-frame through a short wire harness. The 5 inputs to the TCM from the transmission manual shift shaft switch assembly indicate the transmission gear selector lever position. This information is used for engine start enable, engine controls as well as determining the transmission shift patterns. The state of each input is available for display on the scan tool. The five input parameters represented are Signal A, Signal B, Signal C, Signal P (Parity), and Signal N (Park/Neutral Start Signal). Park/Neutral Signal is sent from the Park/Neutral switch directly to the Engine Control Module (ECM) and is used for engine start enable. The Park/Neutral Signal circuit is not connected to the TCM internally. The circuit uses the TCM as a pass-through connector only. The ECM Park/Neutral diagnostic monitors the Park/Neutral signal circuit to detect low voltage when the ECM expects high voltage and high voltage when the ECM expects low voltage.

My Chevy Malibu Maxx is a 2004 and I think it might be a fuse because everything comes on in a car but it won't start what fuse do you think that is.and my mechanic was messing around with it and now my...

Is the vehicle security light lit ? It could be a fuse or the starter relay , or even the ignition switch , or even the PNP - park neutral position switch . This is a complex electronic starting system , computer controlled . The ignition switch is a low voltage input to the the BCM - body control module . When the BCM receives this input to crank the engine a lot of complex commands are sent over the serial data network to the PCM to enegrize the starter relay , there by sending battery voltage to the S terminal on the starter solenoid . If your mechanic disconnected the battery it could have caused the radio to say locked , you need a code to enter into the radio to unlock it , may need to have the dealer hook up their factory scan tool to do that .
Your best bet , find a better automotive technician , not a mechanic.
Circuit Description (Key Start)
For ignition switch power modes refer to Body Control System Description and Operation in Computer/Integrating Systems. Once the ignition is placed in the Run/Crank position, the control circuit of the Run/Crank relay is grounded by the body control module (BCM). With the Run/Crank relay switch closed, battery positive voltage flows through it and on to the park/neutral position (PNP) switch. With the PNP switch in either the Park or Neutral position, battery positive voltage will flow to the starter relay coil supply voltage input terminal of the powertrain control module and the coil side of the starter relay. Placing the ignition in the START position sends a message to the powertrain control module (PCM) requesting engine start. If the PCM has determined that the transmission is in Park or Neutral and theft is not active, it will ground the control circuit of the starter relay. Battery positive voltage will then flow through the switch side of the starter relay to the S terminal of the starter solenoid, cranking the engine.

Where is the neutral safety switch on a2004 chevy Malibu, 3.5 L engine

The transmission range (TR) switch is part of the park/neutral position (PNP) and back-up lamp switch assembly (1), which is externally mounted on the transmission manual shaft. The TR switch contains four internal switches that indicate the transmission gear range selector lever position. The PCM supplies ignition voltage to each switch circuit. By grounding one or more of the switch circuits, the PCM detects the selected gear range by the state change of the switch input. Refer to Transmission Range Switch Logic . Switch input to the PCM is represented on the scan tool as HI and LOW. HI indicates an ignition voltage signal. LOW indicates a zero voltage signal. The four parameters represent transmission range switch signal A,B,C and Parity.

Look on transmission where the shifter cable hooks up !

I have a 01 ford taurus whit p0705 transmission code and i have no idea what this mean

Code P0705 - Transmisson Range Sensor Circuit (PRNDL Input)
The transmission range switch detects the selector lever position and sends a signal to the TCM.

The park/neutral position (PNP) switch includes a transmission range switch. The transmission range switch detects the selector lever position when the shift lever is in the N or P shift position and sends a signal to the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Possible causes
- Open or short park/neutral position switch circuit
- Poor park/neutral position switch circuit connection
- Misadjusted park/neutral position switch
- Park/neutral position switch may be faulty
