Is this car a all wheel drive? ie . 2.5 or 3.0 petrol. if so they suffer from transfer gearbox problems the normal being all the oil has leaked out from the drive flange and the transfer box bearings have failed, or it could just be a wheel bearing noisy support the car on stands with all 4 wheels of the ground and get someone to run the car up to 40 mph then walk round the car and listen to each wheel in turn. if it is a auto the gearbox is also suspect. good luck

Whining noise progressively gets louder with speed

One wheel turning faster than the other is normal if both wheels are off the ground. If one wheel is dragging when the other wheel is on the ground, it could be brakes or a wheel hub bearing.
Usually if the noise happens on right turns, the left hub bearing is failing, and vice versa.

Deceleration whining/humming noise

I would tell the dealer you want your rear differential opened up, checked, and more fluid added. There really is no test they can do other than to pop the cover off the differential.

Whining sound from front passenger side.

Check the condition of front disc brake pads, if they are in need of replacement a preset little metal arm starts rubbing the discs and will make a whining noise. It doesn't do any damage but it's irritating to listen to.
