SOURCE: need to replace serpentine belt.

You should see a spring loaded tensioner, usually right by the pulley you will see a square hole to insert a rachet, pull back and remove the belt.it might be helpful to have a friend to hold the rachet with the tension off the belt.Be careful if the rachet slips, there is a lot of tension on the spring and you could get hurt, watch your hands, don't put fingers between belt and pulleys

SOURCE: replace alternator belt. where do

jsmes1027_36.gif

  • Install a 3/8 inch drive breaker bar to the drive belt tensioner arm.
  • Rotate the drive belt tensioner counterclockwise in order to relieve tension on the belt.
  • If equipped without air conditioning (A/C), remove the belt from the pulleys and the drive belt tensioner.
If equipped with A/C, remove the belt from the pulleys and the drive belt tensioner.
  • Slowly release the tension on the drive belt tensioner.
  • Remove the breaker bar from the drive belt tensioner.
  • Clean and inspect the belt surfaces of all the pulleys.

  • This system has a spring loaded self adjusting tensioner. You will not need to remove any bolts to change the belt out. Here is a picture of what the tensioner looks like. You will see a a 3/8 square drive hole in the tensioner where you can use a 3/8 breaker bar or long ratchet to release the tension and slide the belt off a pulley and then you will be able to remove the belt..

    Remove alternator

why do something dangerous with no books.?
1: pull neg, battery lug, first and only.
2: pull all wires off Alt.
3: loosen all pivots bolts, (can be 3 )
    4: drop the belt.
5: pull off all bolts on alt.
    6: alt falls out.

    tools?, 8mm to 21mm..
well a full set of open end box wrenches (metric) and 3/8" drive socket sets are the minimum to work any small car.

    Change the alternator

First, take several pictures of the serpentine belt arangement so you know how that goes back together.
Here are the steps I recommend :
    - 1 ) Remove negative cable (black) from the battery.
    - 2 ) Loosen the serpentine belt by pulling back the belt tensioner( you may need a special tool)
    - 3 ) Remove the connector plug and( red) hot wire.
    - 4 ) Pull the bolts out holding alt on bracket.
    - 5 ) Pull out alt.
How do you know that the alt is bad ? A auto parts center can check it for you.
What are you replacing it with, new or used.
Please let me know how it goes.

    Bad alternator

the alt is on your fan belt but not sure if it's top or bottom of your engine if it's the top then you might be able to loosen your belt tensioner remove the belt and unbolt the alt, mark all wires both on car and old alt, it really helps when refitting the new 1. then reversing the process to fit the new alt. if it's bottom of your engine then you might need to lift the engine, a lot of work.
