SOURCE: Trying to troubleshoot my check engine light

you need to take to a dealer or a good reliable shop to check the o2 sensors on a scan tool because if they are not doing there job they can not tell the computer to heat up and burn up all ecess gases and set a false cat code.and if it has been missing for a long time it could have burned the cat up........i hope this will help you let me know and good luck..........if i can try and help in any other way let me know and give good info what is going on...........

SOURCE: Have 2000 Toyota Camry XLE. Check Engine light

What your asking, is how to make a malfunction light
go away from your dash, so you can forget you have a
problem & make no attempt to repair the car

Until you find & resolve active OBD2 Codes that actually set
a MIL or Check Lamp it will keep coming back

Every time you clear a code you have to run a drive cylce in
some cases to start the procees over, as you need those codes
to diagnose the issues

The codes that are there, do not tell you what to replace

Without writing a book here, just study OBD Systems online &
take the car to a repair shop

It is beyond your ability at this time to figure out

2006 Buick lacrosse The past few weeks I noticed the exhaust started getting loud. Yesterday I started it up and it was extra loud and sputtering, not wanting to go over 20 mph. Check engine light started...

The exhaust noise could be leak from exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes, muffler. You need to find out what the engine code is for the check engine light. The leak in the exhaust could be creating a code for the O2 sensors in the exhaust system.
Most auto parts stores where I live will check the code on your car for free.

P1298 dtc

This code is a rich code that has been triggered by an O2 sensor. Possible concerns are a leaking fuel injector or maybe a leak in the exhaust system

I just fixed my flex pip on my hyundai accent now I have a loud exhaust noise my check engine light is on saying I have an oxygen leak but took it to a mechanic in they told me that I don't have a exhaust...

Take it to a muffler shop-that mechanic must have a tin ear. I thought my Sentra had a small exhaust leak (slightly loud exhaust noise) from a previously fixed exhaust connection. But a muffler shop guy showed me I had a rusted out catalytic converter. I would suspect your flex pipe may still be leaking.

exhaust leak before the sensor because if was after the sensor it would not pickl it up so there is a exhaust before the sensor

Hi, your bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor is malfunctioning. Recommend you replace the sensor. It is likely this will clear both trouble codes. The sensor is mounted in the rear exhaust manifold, near the firewall. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Trouble Code: P0430

Catalyst System Efficiency Bank 2 Below Threshold
Possible Causes:

Air leaks at the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust pipes Catalytic converter is damaged, contaminated or it has failed ECT/CHT sensor has lost its calibration (the signal is incorrect) Engine cylinders misfiring, or the ignition timing is over retarded Engine oil is contaminated Front HO2S or rear HO2S is contaminated with fuel or moisture Front HO2S and/or the rear HO2S is loose in the mounting hole Front HO2S much older than the rear HO2S (HO2S-11 is lazy) Fuel system pressure is too high (check the pressure regulator) Rear HO2S wires improperly connected or the HO2S has failed

Trouble Code: P2197

Lack of HO2S-21 Switching, Sensor Indicates Lean
Possible Causes:

Base engine problems: engine oil level high, camshaft timing error, cylinder compression low, exhaust leaks in front of HO2S EGR System problem: EGR valve is stuck open, the gasket is leaking, or the EVR diaphragm is leaking Fuel System problem: damaged fuel pressure regulator or extremely low fuel pressure HO2S problems: HO2S circuit is open or shorted in the wiring harness or the HO2S is damaged or it has failed Induction System problems: air leaks after the MAF sensor, PCV system leaks, engine vacuum leaks or dip stick not seated

I have a Pontiac torrent 2006 and I receive the ccodes P0442 small leak from and P0771 lean bank1,previously went to dealer they kept saying gas cap. I need help I think its the converter or oxygen sensor...

A p0442 code is solved by replacing the gas cap in most cases, especially if it is the original gas cap. As for the p0771 lean code, there are many issues that can cause this code, O2 sensor, small exhaust leak, spark plug or fuel injector issue, spark issue...the list goes on. This code will need a good understanding with diagnostic procedure and testing and a scan tool would help. You may get lucky with replacing the spark plugs and checking for an exhaust leak and repair the exhaust. A scanner will allow you to see what the engine management components are doing while the engine is running. Keep in mind, it may take several good trips to turn the check engine light off after repairs are made and codes are erased.

It sounds like maybe an exhaust leak but it has no power

It's possible that an exhaust leak upstream, or ahead of the O2 sensors would cause the O2 sensor to give an inaccurate rich/lean fuel mixture signal to the computer, causing the computer to compensate by increasing or decreasing the timing and or fuel injector pulse, thereby causing the engine to run poorly, which would throw more trouble codes,,etc. It's like falling dominoes. One reaction to the possible false trouble code causes another, and so on. Fist things first. Have the exhaust check for leaks or damage. Leaking exhaust is very dangerous. If there is an exhaust leak, and yo have it repaired, yo will need ot scan the computer for trouble codes and clear them. If the leak was the cause of all the codes then you should not have any more problems related to that. Let me know how this plays out.

2000 E-350 V-10. P0174 with exhaust fix

Before I even finished reading this i knew you had a clogged cat. If you have fixed everything you mentioned i would lean towards a clogged cat. This is a large reason this code pops up.

To check this you could pull that cat out and drive around and see if the code comes back, make sure to stay away from the police though.

Keep getting code po420

Before Checking a Catalytic
Converter DTC
Before you troubleshoot an OBD II vehicle that stores
DTC P0420 (67) (catalyst system efficiency below
threshold), run these quick checks:
1. Check for a leak in the exhaust system. If you find
one, repair it, clear the DTC, and test-drive the
vehicle.
• If the DTC returns, go to step 2.
2. Connect the PGM Tester, and test-drive the vehicle
while an assistant monitors the voltage signal from
the secondary oxygen sensor (HO2S S2). After the
catalyst reaches operating temperature, the HO2S S2
voltage should stay between 0.5 and 0.8 V at steady
cruising speed. During deceleration, the voltage
should be steady at 0.1 V or less.
• If the voltage readings are OK, clear the DTC.
• At cruising speed, if the voltage fluctuates or stays
below 5 V, go to step 3.
3. Measure the inlet and outlet external temperatures of
the catalytic converter with a thermometer capable
of reading up to 500°F.
• If the outlet temperature is more than 100°F hotter
than the inlet temperature, the converter is OK.
• If the outlet temperature is less than 100°F hotter
than the inlet temperature, replace the converter.
