What I described in my question is exactly what is happening. My Mazda has always run great... no problems & even now will crank the first turn & run great for a minute or two but then suddenly the idle will begin to slow down & it will run very rough as if it is going to quit. I have let it run to see if it will quit but it does not quit... it only runs low & rough. I can mash accelerator & it runs like a champ again but let off the gas & the roughness starts right back up. "HELP"
SOURCE: rough idling, rough acceleration then runs decent when i back off
you may need to clean the injectors
what you can do is
you can buy some injector cleaner and see if this helps
make Shaw you get a decent brand as the cheep ones do not work as good
drive around with this in your gas tank
when you have in in your gas tank it helps clean them if you do some harsh acceleration but don't race the motor and don't speed
in other words get to the speed limit fast
this will apply pressure and will push through any gunk build up
there may be some smoke for a while from the exhaust but is will go back to normal when the fuel injector has finished cleaning and all the build up is gone
hopes this helps

Dear Smoker.......Sounds to a trained ear that this little guy is gonna need a fuel pressure regulator. It is basically dumping an excessive amount of fuel with the black smoke and all and once it gets warmed up it runs a little better cause it's out of the closed loop cycle. Check the fuel pressure regulator...pull the vacuum line off of it and if you can smell gas or see gas drippin out....that regulator is junk!!! The pressure regulator is on the fuel rail on top of the motor by the way...this should cure your woes.....if not..please get back to me... I HOPE I COULD HELP!!!
