I have a 3800 series engine, I know there is a leaks in the intake manifold but how would you determine if your heads or if you have a crack anywhere?

When my spark plugs get wet, it won't start and after taking the breather apart we discovered anti freeze in it, but there is nothing leaking any place else!!!

For now you know the Dex-Cool ate the intake gaskets,
so off with the intake

There are newer gasket materials out for that issue &
I would pick a different coolant

If you read ALL the coolant bottle labels, you can find, in any
store,they ALL are Dex-Cool chemicals

There is no more old green coolant & NO one size fits all
Prestone is just dex-cool & lots of non-sense on the labeling

I would use Zerex G-05 even though it is for ford & chry & others

Still have the same engine block, heads, heater parts, radiators, on all
vehicles,so it won't hurt anything, if you use ONLY distilled water &
coolant.

Do a cylinder leak down test first, to confirm proper valve
sealing & hopefully good head gaskets

Going to need new oxygen sensors, once the repairs are made.

I would pull the injectors & mail away for Ultra-Sonic Cleaning

They are 16 plus years old & no other cleaning will do a thing.
They are too old to use & not be tested & cleaned off vehicle

SOURCE: lower intake manifold gasket leaking 02 Olds Silhouette

This is basicly a very time consuming job rather than a physically hard one to complete. In order to replace the gasket you must remove the intake plenum, throttle body, and misc. vacuum hoses. The wiring harness connections must also be disconnected. Finally the intake manifold is exposed. The bolts holding the manifold to the block are removed exposing the leaking gasket. After removing the push rods and placing them in the correct order to be replaced the gasket and sealants can be removed. Finally replace everything in reverse order. Be sure to consult a GM manual for correct bolt torch specs. The correct specs for the manifold bolts usually come with the gasket. Make sure to change your oil a few times after this job in case any coolant entered the block. Also, change the thermostat and the oil seal on the distributor half shaft cap while you have everything off. Good Luck

SOURCE: Leak near the intake manifold

if it is manifold you are inspecting then get a can of spray lubricant,< popular brand not highly flamable > and spray sparingly around manifold to find source of leak. Try an area and wait to see if there is a idle change,<if leak is present idle will change>. Move around intake perimeter doing this until you find problem.

SOURCE: how do you know if

You would have to remove the timing cover to verify valve timing. Do you know why it ran hot? Why did you change the intake gasket?

1998 grand prix 3800 super charged have coolent leak on back head are they bad for cracking

lower intake manifold gasket or head gasket are the two main suspects. The long block itself is tough, it's the stuff that bolts on that usually fails. Cuz plastic likes to warp easier than metal.

The upper intake manifold, or plenum, is notorious for leaking coolant internally into the engine. Replacements are available from many aftermarket sources.

3800 engine

More info on what vehicle your 3800 is in would help, but these engines are notorious for getting cracked intake manifolds. The EGR gasses pass thru the intake very close to the water passages around the throttle body. The hot gases will cause a crack and then water will get sucked into the intake.

I replaced intake manifold gasket on5.7 engine.Water started leaking when I filled resivoir. Why?

Assuming that the leak was coming from the gasket that you just replaced, it could be due to several factors which include the following:

1) uneven mating condition, between intake and head due to non removal of the old gasket
2) gasket could have shifted out of position while the intake was being put in place
3) over torquing or un-even mating condition could have caused a crack in the composite intake manifold
4) under torqued intake to head attachments.

There are also quick disconnects for the heater hoses which may not be properly retained. These quick disconnects have been known to crack, creating a leak,

I would first determine where the liquid is coming from and then concentrate on that interface to solve the issue.

My car is running out of Anti-freeze rapidly, but there is no visible leak under the car or in the engine

You must have a intake manifold or head gasket problem, check to see if the oil level is high, if so it's most likely a intake gasket. Running a engine with this kind of problem won't last long.

Oil in anti-freeze

That is not a good sign. These are a few ways this can happen. Bad head gasket, bad intake manifold gasket, cracked or warped head, or a cracked engine block. If the intake manifold gasket hasn't been replaced yet, have it checked for leaks. The 3100 and 3400 V6 engines are prone for intake gasket failure.

Hello, i have a coolant leak i thought it was the water pump but the leak is above the mount bolt of the water pump beside the valve cover no coolant has gone in the valve interior, could it be a cracked...

A crack in that area of the block, while possible, is highly unlikely. A crack in the block usually happens in between the cylinder walls on the side of the block. It is most likely leaking from the intake manifold gasket that connects the intake manifold to the heads, or if the upper radiator hose connects to the intake manifold, it could be leaking from the thermostat housing or hose. There are also coolant temperature sensors that are mounted in that area. Or last but not least, it could be leaking from one of the freeze plugs in the end of the head. Coolant runs through the block, heads and intake manifold.

Blown upper air intake manifold on gm 3800 series two engine

Parts stores carry a kit including a manifold and gaskets. When I do the job I always replace the lower intake gaskets because they leak too. Make sure the lower manifold is not warped around the rubber gaskets towards the throttle body side, a new or used loewr manifold might be needed to ensure a correct repair.

2003 Mercury Mountaineer with 4.6L is loosing coolant, no steam coming out of tail pipe or fluid leaking on the ground. The dealer thinks it intake manifold or head gasket. The hot oil light has come on...

dont know of any head gasket concerns, usually when the intake manifold leaks it either split and pours out or the heater hose fittings crack and leak. Check the hose connections at the intake and make sure none of the hose clamps have cracked and are leaking
