You must of not put the chain on right. to set it right you must have the number one pistion at the top of cylinder on compression stroke. then line up your timeing marks on the cam shaft then put on the chain.

SOURCE: I have a 1997 GMC Jimmy, 4.3 v6, i have replaced timing chain

Do you have spark? Remove one of the spark plugs and have a helper turn the key while you look for spark. Do you have compression? Buy a compression tester and test the cylinders for compression. If you have fuel, spark, and compression the motor will fire.

What is the firing sequence on 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 multi-port motor

The firing order on all 60 degree V6 engines is 1-2-3-4-5-6. In 1990 GM stroked the 2.8 L engine from to 3.1 L. It's based on the 2.8 L V-6 engine found in 80's cars like the Camaro and Beretta.

1990 jeep Cherokee spits and sputters and back fires when trying to start smells like there is plenty of fuel, changed the cap and rotor to no avail, it will run but acts like its misfiring badly

That could be the timing belt.. have you ever replaced it? (Some Cherokees use a timing chain.) If it is the belt, the more you crank it over, the more valves you can bend or break.

I changed timing belt on 3.2 liter v6 1990 grand am. Why is it still sputtering and back firing

It sounds if the timing is out a tooth. if it run ok before the belt change that is the fault . remove the timing cover , check out timing marks by turning engine clock wise only. after fitting a new belt I all ways set tension and rotate engine twice and recheck marks , saves a lot of time if a tooth out.
