oil from the pcv valve going into your intake manifold will cause a gasket to swell. but it should not be to the point where it's noticeable. you should probably replace the intake manifold gasket at this point.

It appears that you have a minor leak at where a hose attaches to an engine or radiator pipe. When the engine is hot, any small leak will evaporate quickly and therefore not be seen. As the coolant heats up it will expand into the overflow tank but once the engine is stopped the extra heat build up will force the coolant out the leaking joint. As the engine cools, the leak prevents the coolant from being sucked back from the overflow tank.

Check all hoses and clamps including heater hoses and those pesky little bypass hoses in the cooling system for a good tight fit and replace any hoses that have gone hard or have become soft and stretched. Those spring type hose clamps tend to be less effective in clamping as the hoses age. Worm drive ones are the best to use.

If unsure take vehicle to a cooling system specialist and have them do a pressure test and more thorough diagnosis.

If problem persists, then it could indicate a problem with the head gasket (Usually caused by allowing engine to become excessively overheated when cooling system has run dry) allowing very hot high pressure combustion gases into the engine water jacket, which super heats the coolant in the engine block, which then boils off, and is released via the cap or any leaks. If the head gasket is really bad it will leak water into the cylinders and into the oil in the sump. This is indicated by an emulsion of water and oil mix on the dipstick. You will also see white smoke (water vapour) from the exhaust.

My 2002 Land Rover Freelander V6 thermostat crapped out as well and I decided to replace it myself.

The plenum is deceptive, but after 3 hours of looking and trying I finally got it off. Of course there are many hoses and electrical connections that need to be removed, but that's the easy part because you can see them all. The bolts that hold on the plenum are what your worried about and I will now tell you where they are. Read this and you should take about 30min to remove the plenum.

There are a total of 6 bolts to be removed that secure the intake plenum to the intake manifolds.

First remove the 4, 10mm large and obvious bolts at the top of the plenum. Now here is the tricky part, there are 2 bolts that are at the back of the plenum near the fire wall. As you are looking at the intake plenum from the front of the car, they are on the back side of the plenum near the fire wall on the passenger and driver side of the intake plenum.

Both bolts your looking for are 8mm bolts. If you remove a 10mm bolt, your removing the bolts that secure the rear spark plug coils.

The driver side rear intake plenum 8mm bolt is secured to the plenum itself. Fell with your hand about the back of the plenum on the right side for a lone bolt that is in the plenum with a metal tab that goes down to the back of the rear cylinder head. Remove the bolt that is attached to the intake plenum, not on the rear cylinder head

The passenger side one is a bit different. Feel on the back of the intake plenum about the passenger side for a metal support tab that comes down from the intake plenum and secures to the rear cylinder head. Where the support tab attaches to the head is a 8mm bolt that you remove.

Now here come the leap of faith. If you have the 4, 10mm obvious bolts removed and the 2, 8mm from the rear of the plenum removed, and if you can rock the plenum up and down about 2-3 inches,but it still feels like its attached to the intake manifolds in the middle of the engine, then you have removed all the bolts that secure the intake plenum to the engine. This is good.

The intake plenum is now being held on by the rear intake manifold by 3 O-ring gaskets. Push onto the back of the intake plenum near the firewall to expose a gap at the front of the intake plenum at the front intake manifold. Put 2-3 long flat screwdrivers into the gap or a small pry bar, and ever so gently but forcefully, apply prying force as to not damage the mating surface of the aluminum intake manifold, until the intake plenum pops off. It will just POP off.

Now that the intake plenum is popped off, take careful note of all the electrical plugs and hoses as to where they attach. You will not need any tools to disconnect the electrical plugs or hoses. To remove the hoses, push down the red ring with you fingers that the hose goes into and pull on the hose, it should come out very easily. The electrical connectors, push on the metal clip down and pull the connector loose. The electrical connectors only plug into their own plug, so you cant mess them up.

Tools you will need to replace the thermostat;

1. 8mm combo wrench. Make sure its not too long, shorter is better.
2. 10mm socket, shallow. 10mm combo wrench
3. 2-3 flat screwdrivers, for prying off the intake plenum
4. Ratchet wrench
5. 1 foot long worth of socket extensions. 2 6inch extensions will work as well
6. Universal socket joint
7. Angled needle nose pliers make it easier for hose clap removal, but straight needle nose pliers will work
8. Diagonal cutters to cut securing zip ties for the wiring harness

Take you time, once the plenum is off it goes pretty smooth after that. We removed just the forward intake manifold and that was more than enough clearance to remove the thermostat. You do not need to remove the fuel rail or spark plug coils from the manifold but you will need to disconnect the electrical connections to move the intake manifold out of the way.


Take pictures, there's a lot of hoses that go all over the place. The electrical connectors are only long enough to go where their supposed to go.

Then take that UK piece of **** to the dealer and trade it in for anything made in the USA or Japan. Changing a thermostat in any of those will only take 10 min and require 1 tool.

1st are u sure its a bad alternator-cud be a worn main wire on the back causing resistence--get a haynes manual at a partstore or web--read safety part first or just look it ovr and see if u can handle this task--certain tools and xperienc may b needed--finding a gud private mechanic by askin him questions may b easier

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
  2. Install the intake manifold gaskets with the port blocking plates facing the rear of the engine. Factory gaskets should have the words "This Side Up" visible.
  3. Apply gasket sealer to the front and rear sealing surfaces of the engine block.
  4. Apply a 0.197 inch (5mm) bead of RTV sealer to the front and rear of the block. Extend the sealer approximately 1 / 2 -inch (13mm) onto the heads.
  5. Install the lower intake manifold.
  6. Apply sealer to the lower intake manifold bolts prior to installation.
  7. Install the bolts and tighten in sequence and in 3 steps as follows:
    1. First step to 26 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    2. Second step to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    3. Final step to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

  8. If removed, install the alternator bracket bolt.
  9. Install the coolant by-pass hose.
  10. Install the EGR valve.
  11. Connect the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
  12. Connect the heater hose to the lower intake manifold.
  13. Connect the fuel pressure and return lines to the lower intake manifold.
  14. Connect the wiring harnesses and brackets to the lower manifold.
  15. Install the throttle cable bracket, then attach the throttle cable and the cruise control cable (if equipped).
  16. Install the transmission oil level indicator and tube, if equipped.
  17. Install the EGR tube, clamp and bolt.
  18. Install the PCV valve and hose.
  19. Install the A/C compressor and bracket.
  20. Install the distributor.
  21. Install the upper intake manifold.
  22. Fill the cooling system.
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24. Start the vehicle and check the ignition timing (not adjustable).
  25. Verify no oil, coolant, vacuum or fuel leaks.

  26. Install the intake manifold bolts and tighten them to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) in the sequence shown.

How to change the thermostat house in a Dodge 2004 intrepid

Check this procedure for...
2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable.
    CAUTION Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove radiator lower hose from thermostat housing.
  4. Remove nuts from heater tube flange studs.
  5. Loosen starter bolt at heater tube bracket.
  6. Pull heater tube out of thermostat housing and position out of the way.
  7. Remove bolt and two studs.
  8. Remove thermostat housing, O-ring and thermostat.
  9. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
To install:
  1. Clean gasket sealing surfaces.
    NOTE Install thermostat with the bleed valve located at the 12 o'clock position, between tabs on seal.
  2. Install thermostat and seal into thermostat housing .
  3. If removed, install two studs.
  4. Install thermostat, thermostat housing and O-ring and bolt. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs.(12 Nm).
  5. Lubricate new heater return tube O-ring with coolant.
  6. Position heater return tube flange over two studs. Install nuts.
  7. Tighten retaining nuts to 53 inch lbs.(6 Nm).
  8. Tighten starter bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54.3 Nm).
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Install hose clamps.
  10. Refill cooling system.
  11. Inspect for leaks.
  12. Connect negative cable.

3.2L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Disconnect negative cable.
    CAUTION Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  4. Disconnect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  5. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from thermostat housing.
  6. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
  7. Remove housing, thermostat, and gasket.
    NOTE The OEM thermostat is staked in place at the factory. To ensure proper seating of replacement thermostat, carefully remove the bulged metal from the thermostat housing using a suitable hand held grinder. It is not necessary to restake the replacement thermostat into the thermostat housing.
To install:
  1. Position gasket on thermostat and housing.
  2. Install thermostat housing, gasket and mounting bolts onto block. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Install radiator hose.
  4. Install bypass hose.
  5. Connect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  6. Connect negative cable.
  7. Fill cooling system.
  8. Inspect for leaks.
  9. Lower vehicle on hoist.

  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Place a clean drain pan under the radiator, open the drain **** and drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly and the fuel injector sight shield.
  4. Disconnect the cables from the throttle body and mount bracket.
  5. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.
  6. Remove the inner fender electrical cover on the right side.
  7. Remove the right rear crossover pipe heat shield.
  8. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel rail and from the cable bracket.
  9. Remove the alternator and brace.
  10. Remove the throttle body cable mounting bracket with the vacuum lines and disconnect the vacuum lines.
  11. Tag and detach the electrical connections at the throttle body and both banks of fuel injectors.
  12. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the canister purge solenoid valve and transaxle module and intake connection.
  13. Unbolt the power steering pump and move forward. DO NOT disconnect the fluid lines.
  14. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires position lay aside.
  15. Disconnect the coolant bypass hose from the intake manifold.
  16. Remove the solenoid valve mounting bracket and power steering support brace from the intake manifold.
  17. Disconnect the heater pipes from the intake and front cover.
  18. Remove the alternator support brace from the intake.
  19. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the housing.
  20. Remove the thermostat housing and thermostat from the intake.
  21. Detach the electrical connector from the temperature sensor and sensor switch.
  22. Unfasten the intake manifold bolts, then remove the manifold as an assembly. Remove and discard the gaskets.
  23. If separating the upper manifold from the lower, proceed as follows:
  24. Remove the fuel rail and fuel injectors.
  25. Detach the coolant sensor switch.
  26. Remove the manifold end cap cover.
  27. Remove the upper intake manifold and throttle body assembly from the lower manifold. Remove and discard the gaskets. To install:
  28. Thoroughly clean all gasket mating surfaces.
  29. If replacing the upper manifold, proceed as follows:
  30. Apply a 1⁄16 in. bead of Loctite® Instant Gasket Eliminator 51845 or equivalent to the lower manifold mating surface. Make sure to circle all bolt holes.
  31. Carefully lower the upper manifold and throttle body assembly onto the lower manifold.
  32. Tighten the upper manifold retaining bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  33. Install the manifold end cap cover and the coolant sensor switch.
  34. Install the fuel injectors and rail to the manifold assembly.
  35. Clean the mating surfaces and install the intake manifold gaskets and seals. Apply sealer to the ends of the of the intake manifold seals.
  36. Position the intake manifold and apply a suitable thread lock compound to the bolt threads. Tighten the retaining bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm), twice, in the sequence shown in the accompanying figure.
  37. Attach the electrical connector to the temperature sensor and sensor switch.
  38. Install the thermostat housing and thermostat with a new gasket.
  39. Connect the alternator support brace to the intake.
  40. Install the solenoid valve mounting bracket and power steering support brace to the intake manifold.
  41. Connect the heater pipes to the intake and front cover.
  42. Attach the coolant bypass hose to the intake manifold.
  43. Install the power steering pump support bracket and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  44. Install the spark plug wires on both sides.
  45. Install the belt tensioner pulley and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  46. Install the power steering pump.
  47. Connect the vacuum hoses to the canister purge solenoid valve and transaxle module and intake connection.
  48. Attach the electrical connections at the throttle body and both banks of fuel injectors.
  49. Install the alternator and brace.
  50. Connect the throttle body cable mounting bracket with the vacuum lines.
  51. Install the right rear crossover pipe heat shield.
  52. Install the cables to the throttle body.
  53. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel rail and mount bracket.
  54. Install the inner fender electrical cover on the right side.
  55. Install the coolant recovery reservoir and upper radiator hose. Fill the cooling system.
  56. Install the air cleaner assembly and the fuel injector sight shield.

Hello,

Here is a detailed summary on the procedure of how to replace the intake manifold gasket on a 1996 gmc jimmy;
REMOVING THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD(PLENUM)
STEP 1 Disconnect Battery (may not be absolutely necessary, but a good practice to avoid shorting a positive wire to ground).


STEP 2 Remove serpentine belt.

STEP 3 Drain the coolant.

STEP 4 Remove air cleaner ducting and disconnect wires.

STEP 5 Disconnect throttle linkage and bracket.

STEP 6 Disconnect cruise control cable.

STEP 7 Remove brake booster vacuum hose at manifold.

STEP 8 Remove PCV hose.

STEP 9 Remove ignition coil and bracket.

STEP 1O Remove purge solenoid and bracket.

STEP 11 Relieve fuel pressure at test port.

STEP 12 Remove fuel lines and bracket.

STEP 13 Remove upper intake manifold.

REMOVING THE LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD
STEP 1 Remove the distributor and label the spark plug wires.

STEP 14 Remove intake manifold bolts, and manifold.

THE MAIN INSTALLATION
STEP1 Set the new gaskets in place and apply silicone to flat areas on front and rear of engine block.

STEP2 Apply thread locking compound to manifold bolts.

STEP 3 Install the manifold and tighten bolts to 35 ft-lbs, in proper sequence.

STEP4 Install the distributor.

STEP5 Install the upper intake manifold.



The remaining installation procedures are basically the reverse of removal.

Torque sequence for 1996 chevrolet van intake manifold with a 4.3 litre moter

Ha, you tried to fool me with the bit about a 3.5 L motor--I could find that one...here is the complete procedure from AutoZone.com:




Installation To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces. Be sure to inspect the manifold for warpage and/or cracks. If necessary, replace it.
  2. Position the gaskets on the cylinder head with the port blocking plates to the rear and the This Side Up stamps facing upward. Then apply a 3 / 16 in. (5mm) bead of RTV sealant on the front and rear of the engine block at the block-to-manifold mating surface. Extend the bead 1 / 2 in. (13mm) up each cylinder head to seal and retain the gaskets.

  3. Install the lower intake manifold. Tighten the bolts in sequence and in 3 steps, as follows:

  4. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering pump Alternator bracket bolt near the thermostat housing Wiring harness to the lower manifold components, including the injector, EGR valve and ECT sensor Air conditioning compressor bracket-to-the lower intake manifold pencil braces
  5. Install transmission oil dipstick tube, if necessary.

    Fuel supply and return lines to the rear of the lower intake
  6. Temporarily reattach the negative battery cable, then pressurize the fuel system (by cycling the ignition without starting the engine) and check for leaks.
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8. Install or connect the following:

    Heater hose to the lower intake Upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing Distributor assembly and engage the wiring Ignition coil Connect vacuum hoses to the upper and lower intake manifold. New upper intake manifold gasket, making sure the green sealing lines are facing upward Upper intake manifold Manifold retainers. Tighten them to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm) using two passes. Purge solenoid and bracket Brake booster vacuum hose at the upper intake manifold PCV hose to the rear of the upper intake manifold Vacuum hoses to both the front and rear of the manifold assembly Throttle body Throttle linkage to the upper intake Wiring to the upper intake components including the TP sensor, IAC motor, MAP sensor and the fuel meter Engine cover Air intake assembly
  9. Connect negative battery cable.
  10. Refill the engine cooling system.

Need to replace the intake manifold

3.8L Engine (most common) Upper Intake Manifold To Remove:
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable.
    • Fuel injector sight shield.
    • Air cleaner intake duct.
    • Right spark plug wires from the ignition control module and reposition.
  3. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Fuel rail assembly.
    • Brake booster hose from the vacuum source manifold in the upper intake manifold.
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR) wiring harness heat shield nut, bolt and the EGR heat shield.
    • Throttle body support bracket upper bolt.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the following:
    • EVAP purge solenoid
    • Throttle Position (T/P) sensor
    • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
    • EVAP purge solenoid vacuum line from the throttle body.
    • Accelerator and the cruise control cables with the bracket from the throttle body.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold bolts and stud.
    • Clean the upper intake manifold bolt threads.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold by lifting the back of the intake and sliding the manifold forward from the throttle body support bracket.
    • Upper-to-lower intake manifold carrier gasket from the upper intake manifold.
  8. If the upper intake manifold is being replaced, remove the following:
    • Throttle body assembly.
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
    • Vacuum source manifold.

To Install:
  1. If the manifold was replaced, install or connect the following:
    • Vacuum source manifold.
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
    • Throttle body assembly.
    • Upper-to-lower intake manifold carrier gasket to the upper intake manifold.
  2. Carefully place the upper intake manifold onto the lower intake manifold. Ensure that the alignment pins in the upper intake manifold align with the holes in the lower intake manifold. NOTE: Apply thread lock compound, to the bolt threads before assembly.
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold. Tighten the upper intake manifold bolts in sequence to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • Accelerator and the cruise control cables with the bracket to the throttle body.
    • EVAP purge solenoid vacuum line to the throttle body.
  4. Connect the electrical connectors to the following:
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • Throttle Position (T/P) sensor
    • EVAP purge solenoid
  5. Install or connect the following:
    • Throttle body upper support bracket bolt. Tighten the bolt to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • EGR valve wiring harness heat shield, nut and the bolt. Tighten the nut and the bolt to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • Brake booster hose to the vacuum source manifold.
    • Fuel rail assembly.
    • Right spark plug wires.
    • Air cleaner intake duct.
    • Fuel injector sight shield.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Fill the cooling system.
  8. Inspect for fluid or vacuum leaks.
Lower Intake Manifold (W/O Supercharger) To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold.
    • Generator brace.
    • Drive belt tensioner with the mounting bracket and the heater water bypass inlet pipe.
    • Exhaust gas recirculation EGR outlet pipe bolt from the lower intake manifold.
    • Radiator inlet hose from the water outlet housing.
    • ECT sensor electrical connector.
    • Right upper engine mount strut bracket.
    • Generator brace bracket bolts.
    • Generator brace bracket.
    • Lower intake manifold bolts.
    • Lower intake manifold.
    • Lower intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold gaskets.
  2. If replacing the lower intake manifold, Remove or disconnect:
    • Water outlet housing bolt and stud
    • Water outlet housing
    • Gasket and the thermostat.
    • ECT sensor.
  3. Inspect the flatness of inlet flanges.
  4. Clean the intake manifold mating surfaces.
  5. Clean the intake manifold bolts and bolt holes of adhesive compound.
To Install:
  1. If removed, install the ECT sensor.
    • Tighten the ECT sensor to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  2. If removed, install the thermostat, the gasket, and the water outlet housing.
  3. If removed, install the water outlet housing bolt and the stud.
    • Tighten the bolt and stud to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower intake manifold gaskets. NOTE: Apply sealer GM P/N 12346286 (Canadian P/N 10953472) or equivalent to the ends of the intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold.
    • Lower intake manifold bolts.
    NOTE: Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the two hidden bolts and ensure they are installed.
  5. Tighten the lower intake manifold bolts in sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) gmpc_v6_5.gif

  6. Install or connect the following:
    • Generator brace bracket.
    • Generator brace bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    • Right upper engine mount strut bracket.
    • ECT sensor electrical connector.
    • Radiator inlet hose to the water outlet housing.
    • EGR outlet pipe to the lower intake manifold.
    • EGR outlet pipe bolt to the lower intake manifold. Tighten the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
    • Drive belt tensioner.
    • Generator brace.
    • Upper intake manifold.
  7. Inspect for leaks.
Lower Intake Manifold (W/ Supercharger) To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the supercharger.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the EGR pipe at the intake manifold.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connection at the temperature sensor.
  7. Remove the intake manifold and gaskets.
NOTE: The coolant bypass tube will release from the intake manifold when the manifold is removed.
To Install:
  1. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces.
  2. Install the intake manifold gaskets.
  3. Align the coolant bypass tube with the opening in the intake manifold and install the manifold. Tighten the bolts to 11 lb ft (15 Nm).
  4. Install the electrical connector to the temperature sensor.
  5. Install the EGR pipe to the intake manifold.
  6. Install the thermostat housing.
  7. Install the supercharger.
  8. Fill the cooling system.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

I own a impala 2003 and i would like to know how to change the thermostat on it.The motor is a 3.4 liters

Drain radiator. Remove upper rad hose from thermostat housing. Disconnect air intake hose from throttle body. Remove throttle body from upper intake manifold, disconnecting the 2 rubber hoses to the heater line. You may also need to disconnect the fuel line. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield and loosen the crossover pipe from both exhaust manifolds but don't remove crossover completely. You should have access to the 2 thermostat housing bolts, remove upper bolt but just loosen the lower one about a half inch. Pull the housing out and up from the intake manifold to access the thermostat. Clean the mating surfaces with a gasket remover. replace thermostat, apply a light coating of rtv sealant to both sides of the new gasket. Replace thermostat housing with the gasket to the intake manifold. Apply some rtv to the bolt threads before reattaching housing. Tighten bolts snugly but do not over tighten. Tighten exhaust crossover and reattach the heat shield. Install throttle body attaching the 2 little hoses at the bottom, its a good time to replace these hoses and clamps. Depending on the condition of the throttle body gasket you may need to replace it also. Reconnect the fuel line (if disconnected) Reconnect air intake hose to throttle body. Reattach the upper rad hose to housing. Fill rad with coolant 50/50 mix with water (make sure to use the same type antifreeze that is in the system, they say you can mix green with red but I wouldn't recommend) Leave rad cap off start the car and let it warm up until you can see the coolant circulating and ad coolant as necessary until full. Now there is going to be some air in the system that you need to bleed out. There are 2 bleeders on this system, 1 is on the top of the thermostat housing, and the other is on the metal heater line on top of the water pump (the one that goes across the front of the engine and around under the throttle body that the two little hoses attach to) Bleed the one on the housing first (its the lower one) open it until fluid comes out then tighten it. Then move to the 1 on the heater line(above water pump) loosen it until fluid comes out the re-tighten. Fill recovery tank to fill line replace the rad cap and take it for a ride, watching the temp gage closely. If the temp goes higher than normal than there is probably more air in the system. you'll have to bleed it again.
This is a very labor intensive procedure and I do recommend buying or checking a service manual out from your local library. I've done these in the past and to be honest I just have the dealer do it now. A system flush and thermostat replacement was around $230 the last time I had it done, but it comes with a warranty. And you wont have to rent or buy a fuel line disconnect tool if you end up having to disconnect it. These are the hardest thermostats I've ever replaced.

Hot do you take off a 98 GMC 5.7 vortec intake

Note, removing the upper intake manifold is not necessary when removing lower intake manifold, they are removed as an assembly.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner assembly and inlet duct. Mark and remove distributor. Remove upper radiator hose at thermostat housing. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables. Remove heater hoses from intake manifold. Remove EGR pipe.
Disconnect fuel lines at rear of engine. Remove AC compressor and set aside(leave hoses connected). Remove canister purge solenoid. Disconnect theSCPI injector, ignition coil, Ignition Control Module, generator,IAC motor, TP sensor, O2 sensor, Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve and Engine Coolant Temperature sensor wiring harness connectors. Remove PCV valve and hose. Remove lower intake manifold bolts. Remove lower intake manifold.
Installation.
Always use New O-rings when reconnecting fuel lines at rear of engine. Apply a bead of RTV silicone sealer along the front and rear sealing surfaces of the block.See Fig.6. Install new gaskets and intake manifold on block while RTV is still wet to the touch. Use Threadlock 12345382 or equivalent to lower intake manifold bolts. Tighten lower intake manifold bolts in sequence to specification table. See fig. 7. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.f52665d.gifabc2b5f.gif

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Drain the coolant system.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Air cleaner fresh air hose
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve hose
    • Fuel line from the rail
    • Throttle cable from the throttle body
    • Throttle cable bracket nuts
    • Fuel injector electrical connectors
    • Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connectors
    • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve electrical connectors
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connectors
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve electrical connectors
    • Heater hose from the intake manifold outlet
  5. Position the wiring harness over the brake master cylinder
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Intake manifold support bracket bolt
    • Label the vacuum line for proper assembly
    • Drive belt
    • Power steering pump
    • Upper intake manifold bolts
    • Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve solenoid vacuum hose
    • Brake booster vacuum hose
    • Lower intake manifold bolts
    • Intake manifold
    To install:
  7. Thoroughly clean all gasket mating surfaces. Be careful not to damage or score the aluminum surface. If replaced, use Loctite® 290, to seal the new PCV valve inlet tube into the manifold. NOTE: Refer to Section 1 of this manual for the intake manifold torque sequence illustration. The illustration is located after the Torque Specification Chart.
  8. Install or connect the following:
    • New gasket and manifold. Torque the nuts in sequence to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    • Power steering pump. Torque the fasteners to 27 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
    • Drive belt.
    • Heater hose and install the manifold support bracket bolt. Tighten the bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    • Lubricate the male ends of the fuel lines with a few drops of clean engine oil, then connect the fuel supply and return lines.
    • Fuel line(s) in the retaining bracket. Torque the mounting screw to 36 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
    • Throttle cable to the throttle body and attach the accelerator cable bracket. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    • Reposition the wiring harness and connect the wiring and vacuum hoses to their original locations. The harness leads to the TP sensor and EGR solenoid must be routed between the intake manifold runners.
    • Negative battery cable
  9. Fill the coolant system.
  10. Prime the fuel system by cycling the ignition ON for 5 seconds and OFF for 10 seconds a few times without cranking the engine.
  11. Start the engine, check for leaks, and repair if necessary.
