Liquid gasoline keeps pump cool - running dry overheats and probably locked up the pump - the pump should run for about 3 seconds when the key is first turned on - tank is under the car under rear seat area- tank has to be dropped to replace pump ,if you cannot hear it run at all - some cars have access panels under rear seat - foreign cars are the only ones i know about that tank does not have to be dropped down

Running out of gas can sometimes damage the injectors and cause them to leak. However it appears you have some type of blockage or air trap in your system or your fuel pump has stopped working. Check your fuses.

Do I have to remove the gas tank to inspect/change the fuel pump on a 1991 pontiac grand prix?

Unfortunately, yes. It's a pain. I own a 1991 Pontiac grand prix SE 3.1L.

My fuel pump problem started when I ran out of gas (gas gauge was offset) Of course it shuts off w/o gas but it will more likely kill your fuel pump and clog the $#!t out of your filter.

If it makes a buzzing sound under the vehicle w/o the engine running, near the trunk area, replace it along with the filter.

1998 Grand Prix ...Last week I got gas when running real low and was in a rush. In my haste I noticed when I was leaving the ground around the tanks was dug around there. a couple days later my car started...

If I'm understanding you correctly, you believe you got contaminated gas from a station where they had recent work done on their tanks. If that's so, Now that you've run most of the gas out I would start by changing the fuel filter then fill the tank with good gas (I might even go up on grade for this tank). Although it's unlikely you may have gotten a fair amount of dirt or water, you may want to try adding some dry gas in case there is still water in the bottom of your tank.
If the new filter seems to clear the problem but it come back after a short while you'll need to take the tank off and flush it. If you do it yourself don't dump the gas on the ground. If you have to flush your tank you'll need to flush the gas lines and replace the fuel filter again.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix check engine light comes on and goes off randomly. What could be the problem

check the gas cap. there is a sensor somewhere in the gas tank that knows when the gas cap is loose or has a defective seal.

Engine won"t turn over(crank)

I ran into this once also, and I remember that I just disconnected the battery for about half an hour.

Try that if you haven't already.
