What is best transmission fluid to use for transmission oil change?
My 99 Montero Sport is manual transmission. Should I use Mitsubishi only transmission fluid to do a transmission oil change. Is it the same as the automatic transmission. I've heard for automatics to use Mitsubishi Diamond SPIII ATF. Thanks.

You need 9.8 quarts of Dexron III or later, for a dry fill. A wet service fill will be less, about 6-7 quarts. Autozone or any other auto spares outlet will have it.
Mitsubishi would love for you to use their oil, lololol. In reality, the proper oil is the oil rating needed. I usually use a good name brand oil and be sure it is that SPIII ATF I guess. I use Hypoid GL4 manual transmission oil which also can go into the rearend too if needed. If replacing the trany oil, be sure to dump the old oil and clean the magnet located on the drain bolt when you dump it. By the way, I use the oil I mentioned in an 86 Mitsubishi mighty max 5 speed. I use the 80-90wt. Might need to warm it up before pumping it into the tranny. Don't over or under fill the trany too.
Hi Sc, The job is labour intensive and may solve the problem. I wonder if the fluid in the tranny has ever been replaced? It's meant to be replaced at least once a year. If it smells burned have it replaced. Ask your shop to check the gearbox and engine mountings and in the event of your vehicle having rear wheel drive, the universal joints on the prop shaft. Hi there:On 1998 Mitsubishi Truck Montero Sport 4WD 3.0L MFI 6cyl check this Transmission Fluid Type/Capacity information: Application:With automatic transmission
AW30-40LE transService change only - 2.3 quarts. Total refill - 10.4 quarts.
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.
Hi,
You need about 3.5 quarts or until the filing hole drips when putting the gear oil. SAE 90W is required, add some aftermarket lubricant additive for best result.
Hope that helps you!
Not familiar with montero , but generaly speaking , automatic transmissions are filled , or toped up through the tube where the transmission dipstick is. Hope this helps. Make SURE you use the correct trans fluid , there are several different kinds. The recomended fluid is usualy marked on the dipstick.
theres no dip stick ,there are to plugs on trany one on the bottom to drain and one on the side, remove the side one oil is full when it starts to flow out,but caution dont star removing bolts unless your sure could cause trany damage on some tranys,go to a oil and lube shop have them lift truck and check takes 5 to 10 minutes, good luck.
Ok, Mobil atf is more of a universal fluid, where Mitsubishi atf would be specifically formulated to be used in their products. Personally I would use the Mitsubishi as it is brand specific, but you can use either one with more than likely no problems.
