I inherited a 1998 ford escort that ran when my uncle had it but never since I got it I put a new ecu in it does it need to be reprogrammed for that car.

There are MANY factors that will make a car fail to run, the least of which is the ECU. The ECU is plug & play, IF it is the CORRECT ECU! It is VERY rare for the ECU to fail unless the car has been improperly jump-started or has been immersed in water (which will cause even more problems).

Put the original ECU back into the car and check the following:

  1. Is the fuel system working?
  2. Is there spark?
  3. Is the timing belt intact?
You will likely find that the failure is not the ECU.

SOURCE: rear drum removal 1998 ford escort

Hi,
Removing the drums can be a little difficult if they are really worn and. have a large lip inside where the brake shoes have worn them down.
Anyway here goes, loosen wheel nut/s slightly, raise the car and make safe by using an axle stand or similar then lower it so the wheel is off the ground.
Remove all nut/s and take wheel to one side, you'll then see the whole of the drum, there should be 1 or 2 retaining Philips type screws between the locating holes for the wheel, these need to be removed possibly with an impact screwdriver if too tight.
Once screws are out release the hand brake, hopefully the drum will rotate, try waggling it from side to side along it circumference pulling the drum towards you, it may move a few mm then lock? try using a very heavy rubber mallet to thump the outside edge of the drum whilst turning it. This hopefully will loosen the brake shoes holding the drum on you may need to keep doing this for a good while.
If you have no success then try carefully doing the same with a copper/hide hammer. Still no joy then possibly the lip inside is too great meaning the drums maybe beyond their wear limit so a good belt with a heavy lump hammer is the only way.
I hope this helped? please press the Blue button if happy with my FREE Efforts, Thank You!

SOURCE: where can i find the timing marks on 1998 ford escort zx2 ?

Hello pamgolmon: My name is Roger and i will answer your question. The 2-0 dual cam engine is a interference engine. This means if the engine jumps time at the timing belt. It will bend the valves. As for the timing marks on the camshafts. Their are no marks to be located. To set the timing marks on this engine requires special tools. This makes it expensive for not only the do it yourself mechanic but also the repair shops also. If the valves were bent you must pull the head for the repairs also.
I know this is not the answer you were hoping for but it is the only answer to give. Please rate the quality of the answer as this way we know your answer was correct. Please just ask if you need further help. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
