I have a 1997 Ford escort, 4 cyl. before I had the repairs listed below the car ran PERFECT! my mechanic replaced the A/C manifold hose assy, changed my oil and filter, then filled the R&I VSS to check manual transaxle fluid. While checking the manual fluid, he disconnected the battery. While backing out of the shop, the car died...he told me it would have to reset itself, then it would be fine. Well, it's barely running, it won't idle when I first start the car, black smoke it coming from the exhauste, and it surges, runs extremely rough! I had the mechanic look at it again, he tells me I'm just going to have to drive it, it will eventually will reset! I can't do this something is definiately wrong. The "service engine soon" light comes on then goes off but this is ridiculous. Please help!

Yes if you disconnect the battery then the stradegies reset and it does take awhile for them to reset.
However if the service engine soon light is coming on then there is a problem with your vehicle.You will need to have it scanned for codes. Since you are blowing black smoke at start up I suspect either a vacuum line is off or a loose connection at the Mass Air Flow sensor.

He has broken the pipe going to the egr valve and it is letting the smoke out of the car, take it back tell him to fix it as it didn't even make it out of his yard and he can drive it till it's fixed and he can give you a loner till he gets it rest or fixed or you will see him in court.

Sounds like you make have a vacumn leak on one of the rubber vacumn lines that attach to the intake manifold. Check all of these lines and look for cracks, pinholes and lines that have colapsed.

I have a ford 1994 Escort, it keeps cutting out whilst driving. Cleaned the idle speed valve and throttle body, didn't work. Changed idle speed valve, didnt work. Cleaned the the lamda sensor, didnt work....
There is many thing that could go wrong. I will list some for you to try to pinpoint the problem with out paying the mechanic to do.
1. Cloged fuel filter and possible inpurities in fuel system
2. Faulty or incorecctly gaped spark plugs
3 Fault in the fuel or electrical system
4. incorect ignition timming
5. Defective spark plug wires
6. Low or uneven cylinder compression pressures. Perfom a compression test.
7. Weak or faulty ignition system.
8. Vacuum leaks in the intake manifold or vacuum hoses.

if it (THE FILTER) doesn't say "MOTORCRAFT" on it then they changed it, THE FILTER IS LOCATED UNDER THE HOOD TO REAR OF ENGINE ON DRIVERS SIDE.

i had same problem check all vacume hoses front and rear of engine whene u find leak u will notice a large difference just by putting finger over it and then replace or repair hose. good luck hope it works for ya.
