Engine warning light stays on

Car runs fine but engine warning light stays on after starting the car

It's the check engine light..
Take it down to Auto Zone or another auto parts store
And have them check the engine codes.
It could be something like a sensor or something more serious.

Take the vehicle to your local auto parts store and have them read the check engine light code for you and then you can bring that back here and someone will be able to help you figure out what is going on. Just because you can't tell what it is right now doesn't mean that something isn't going bad very soon. Let us know. Thanks for using FixYa!

SOURCE: 91 Land Cruiser, starts fine, however all dash

I've had a similar issue. Turned out the Alternator was clogged with mud and wasn't charging anymore. Pulled it out and apart, cleaned it out and put it back and voila! Problem solved. Check the output of your Alternator, should be around 13.2-13.5V.

Yes it may be the wires are shorting or its actually the problem with instrument cluster.
Also get the vehicle scanned for any error codes stored in computer this will confirm whether is short circuit issue or actual problem:------

2004 olds alero 3400 eng.turn on key and all warning lights and gauges come up,then all goes off after 3 seconds,starter will not work,can start by jumping across starter and runs fine and shifts fine

Check for power at the switch wire when someone turns the key to start. I would say there is a break in the circuit of the thin wire between the starter & the ignition switch

Some of the warning lights stay on.

so all the lights that come on when you first turn the key on stay on? maybe your alternator is not working properly? or not connecting to your dash panel correctly? or maybe the engine management system has a fault in it? more likely to be a dodgy connection to your dash board.
