For my 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport. A couple weeks ago, advance auto said my engine light was on due to a misfire on #3. I then replaced the wires, plugs, distributor cap and rotor. My light came back on

Don't know if this is related to my engine light, but while my engine light was on the first time, I got a new muffler and tailpipe. The Jeep seems to be coughing/puffing more than usual

Is this a 5.7? They are notorious for intake manifold gasket leaks. When mine did it, the diagnostics blamed it on an ignition misfire also! Replaced the gaskets and it runs smooth!

then i would replace whats called the hall effect sensor its that black plastic plate you see when you take dist cap off. just pull rotor and lift up the sensor.dist cap is what holds it on.also under the sensor will be a stamped sheet metal piece that looks like the top of a castle wall. make sure its not loose on the shaft.if it is then new dist will be needed

Have it checked with a computer diagnostics. It sounds like it could be a bad sensor, quite possibly your oxygen sensor. A bad sensor could cause the computer to think your engine needs more fuel.

Good Evening, I ran across this a couple weeks ago. Needless to say it was something that did not even put up a check engine light. We ended up changing the camshaft position sensor (the electronic pickup in the distributor), we changed the crankshaft position sensor thinking that with the heat maybe there was a breakdown in the sensor and ended up changing the camshaft sensor and squared it all away. Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Joey

take the vehicle VIN # down - it is also on the registration - - take that to the local auto zone or Advance auto -- and they will 'code it ' - then - no matter what - call the local dealer for the real scoop on the code - - also ask about recalls on ur vehicles - - - write it down and put them in ur glove box

Like many others, I'm having trouble with my '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 L engine and 4X4. Engine sporadically misfires, especially when coming to a stop. Sometimes dies on idle or startup....

Make sure the ignition coil drive is in proper sync. The sync should be at or close to 0. Also try an engine decarb this works great on 4.0 engines. Also if the misfire is coming for #3 there is a bulliten on installing a heat sheild around the #3 injector because it takeing a lot of heat from the exhaust mainfold that sits right under it.

Well the water pump sounds bad....it is a cheap fix at $34.00 and will fix the overheating problem. The O2 sensors start at $63.00...but if you have a "check engine light" on, get it read at the parts store for free and see if the code is for the O2 sensor.
