SOURCE: runs erratically

The idle air valve (located below the throttle body) provides the control for constant idle speed. In order to set the correct air valve opening to achieve constant idle speed, the fuel injection control unit uses information from the air mass meter, throttle valve switch and the ignition control unit (RPM signal) to regulate the output current to the idle air valve. This means that the idle valve is not affected by air leaks or a jammed throttle valve.

SOURCE: Vw polo maintains engine revs when foot is off the accelerator.

You need to check the cable the runs from the gas pedal to the engine, it might be rusty and need some drops of penetrating oil at the point it meets with the engine accelerator valve.

I would consider changing the vehicle speed sensor. When they go bad, they can really throw out a lot of bad data to the computer, resulting in unexpected behavior like you're experiencing. They're only around $20-$25. I hope this helps! :)

Yes it is the clutch slipping, in high gear the greatest load is put on the clutch so that is when they slip the most.

if your vehicle slows from 70 downto 60 with no change in revs ,then the transmission is slipping .. imust say i dont believe that the speed drops back without the revs dropping down too, i am not calling you a liar ,i`m saying you are not making accurate observations , and without those we are just guessing .

White smoke is a sign of antifreeze (coolant) mixing with your motor oil. Check your coolant to see if it is still full. And check your motor oil to see if it is overfull!
