After mandatory tire chain installation, the dash lit up like the fourth of July - ABS, Traction Control, Check Engine and Steering warning lights illuminated all at once. I removed the chains and all lights went off except ABS and traction control. My VW mechanic confirmed damage to wheel sensors and advised against repairing them in case I needed to install chains again. The additional lights stayed off until the end of a long drive home (~200 miles). When I exited the freeway, all the aforementioned lights came back on, as well as the check engine and hand brake light with a single beep alarm. Each turn additionally caused the gas gauge and speedometer to drop to zero and empty respectively. Is this all related to the sensor damage, or is this indicative of a more pervasive (and costly) electrical problem?

Take the car to a VW main dealer and ask them to run a diagnostics report on it. This should tell you. Other companies are able to do the same tests for a cheaper cost, but I'd always prefer to take it to a main dealer.

You are loosing power Because the Computer is Shifting the Transmission in to Traction Low to get out of the Situation. The ABS Light is coming on due to Wheel spin. It is telling you that there has been an Unexpected Incident and to slow down.

These problems do not seem to be related at all. The cause of the warm ac air could be several things from a low refrigerant charge to a plugged condensor fins to the compressor clutch not kicking in. You just have to follow a systematic approach when diagnosing these problems.

First, to read VW codes you will want to get yourself a $50 VAG tool. It will read all your systems, not just the ECU.
Electronic Power Control can go out for several reasons. Check your brake lights with the car running. Check you radiator fluid level. If the car is running bad, you could have bad spark plugs/ wires or ignition coil.
The traction control is tied into the ABS system and often causes problems here as well. Each wheel has a speed sensor and magnet wheel in the hub. You can check these for damage by removing the tires for access. The sensors come out by hand, and inside the hole they come out of is the place to check the magnets with a flash light. Apply a small amount of wheel bearing grease to the sensor.
The control unit goes out in these systems at an alarming rate. They can be easily removed, and repaired for under $200 at modulemaster.com
Since it is intermit, I suspect most likely a loose sensor, or electrical connector.
If your brakes feel squishy at all, bleed the brake lines of air and contaminants.
Good Luck!

the lights should come on when you start the car, then go off about 10 secs after the engine fires.if it comes on at other times then it needs to go onto diagnostic computer.asap.
